Plex for PlayStation 4 v2 beta

No I am saying it was visibile, albeit the user icons not loading or partial loading, it was extremely laggy, and the only way to get past the user select screen was to spam the X button whilst the app was opening (meaning you could only login to the first user) so the way I got beyond the user select screen was removing my pin, hitting X multiple times and waiting for around 2 minutes, then slowly moving to the settings. After that, it worked fine (even after multiple uninstalls, restarts, re-installs etc.)

Very strange. Thanks for the info. We just pushed out an update today that might have helped, so I wonder if the issue no longer appearing is because your app updated after you got past the issue the first time. Something to look out for.

This was 2 days ago I got past, but yes It may not have been updating due to it being severely slow on the user screen.

@moussa

The login procedure now seems to work again. But no file (no matter if SD and AVI or MKV) can be played directly anymore. It transcodes everything. Even files that could be streamed directly before are now only possible with transcoding and often in a worse quality than set:

4 Mbps instead of 8 Mbps

Somehow you seem to be worsening the app more than improving it.

Is a solution possible here or does it have anything to do with the new interface or anything else? Because until about 3-4 weeks ago, it all worked out the way it should.

Could you post some server logs after enabling logging within the app?

I have the exact same problem. Neither standard formats like mp3, nor mkv is played directly. Always transcodes. I’ll provide logs as soon as they’re printed.

That’s what I could extract with my untrained eyes

ClientProfileExtra: music transcode target already exists for streaming dash

[ui-ps4-ps4] [MDE] Direct play failed; unsupported container: flac

[ui-ps4-ps4] No type was found for artist

[ui-ps4-ps4] [MDE] Direct play failed; unsupported container: mp3

@Moussa here are the logs. I hope this helps and you’ll find the culprit :grinning:

Plex Media Server.log (1.2 MB)

I’m a bit late to the game, I am also having a frustrating amount of crashes with Plex on my PS4 Pro. Restarting the system or server doesn’t seem to help, and if I try long enough eventually it will play the file. Some times it crashes upon entering the video to see options, other times it waits for me to hit ‘Play’ and then crashes.

Once in a while it will also crash the server entirely, and I need to restart the service on the server, which is a Win 10 x64 machine.

I’ve tried a few changes to the PS4 profile on the server but it doesn’t seem to be related to transcoding as far as I can tell.

The worst part is if I use the PS4 media player and DLNA about half of my files have unsupported audio, so my PS4 is now unoperational.

Chromecast from a laptop to the PS4 app is also not working at all, so I find myself using the chromecast input. Is there a consolidated list of other troubleshooting steps I can take to try to fix this?

Hi,I have just updated to the newest version of plex via the app store for ps4.
Unfortunately I get the error “Server cannot be reached securely”
I access this the server on other platforms (PC, iphone, Samsung TV) and others (Also on PS4, TV etc) with no issues.

The PS4 is on the same network - so in my mind, should just work. Coupled with that error - I can’t actually move to different menus as the platforms seems unresponsive.

Any suggestions with what may be causing this?

For a second try to start your brain. Moussa is not solely responsible for any update in any form at any platform.
A personal attack like that makes you look like an imbecile.

As for as the PS4 app goes, it works fine for me and I assume 99%. I think it’s ugly, always said that.

Then for the love of god, leave. You don’t even have a plex pass.

The ps4 app has been working with no issues for me. However, I found a bit of a weird issue today. One particular movie plays the audio, but no video shows up, just a black screen. This same file works fine on all my other plex apps. It just doesn’t play correctly on the ps4 app. It’s an mp4 with h. 264 video and ac3 audio.

Any idea what is causing this? If I can provide any additional info to help diagnose the issue please let me know.

Thank you!

Can you play the file directly from Computer or/and with Plex Web?

Yes I can. It plays with no issues.

Same here, can’t use Plex on PS4. Latest version PS4 SW, but non PRO, latest Plex Server Beta, local network, german language. RasPlex, mobile etc all works. Just PS4 client glitches and freezes on account selection.
Unusable

@Donatus1989 Thanks for the logs. The PS4 player doesn’t support MP3 or mkv containers. We’re hoping to add support for them but that is dependant on platform support.

@Dragoon_nz Is it possible DNS rebinding is an issue on your router? Please see https://support.plex.tv/articles/206225077-how-to-use-secure-server-connections/

@Pfor A sample would be very helpful!

@blackandcold We’re looking into issues with the user menu

Been using it and am mostly happy with it . Only two things I have issues with:

A grid view when in a “COLLECTIONS” would be nice. I have some large collections to keep my main menu clean, and scrolling through them isn’t idea compared to the standard grid like on a PC.

About the only time PLEX locks up or freezes is when scanning media, especially if you want to reverse scan a file a couple of minutes. I’ve had it show the file time code back up to roughly where I want it, then pause, and then actually jump ahead past where I started when I “rewound” the file. I’m guessing this is due to transcoding or something, but some kind of fix would be appreciated.

Mentioned that the PS4 doesn’t work with MKV containers, but I can play most MKV files direct from the USB with the PS4 medial player, and I have only had one issue with a MKV file steaming from my QNAP NAS to my PS4. Or is it just mp3 audio in MKV container?

Thanks for the quick response Moussa. A sample file can be found at this link:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/w5rhy8ce23xiodi/Die%20Hard%20(1988)%20TEST.mp4?dl=0

I tested out the sample file and it does the same thing as the original file on the PS4 Plex app. It plays and I can hear audio, but there is no video, the screen remains black. The sample file plays normally on both the Plex app on my android phone, as well as the plex app installed on my PC with no issues.

Hope this helps in determining what the issue may be but please let me know if I can provide any additional information.

Thank you!

@russbgrant Thanks for the report. We have some server fixes coming for seeking, so interested to see if they help. The PS4 Media Player is a native platform app and may support more codecs/containers than what is made available to partner apps. The Plex for PlayStation 4 app doesn’t support the mkv container (for any type of content), but it should be a simple matter of a remux from your server, which isn’t very intensive at all.

@Pfor Thanks for the sample file. I’m afraid I can’t reproduce the issue described on my PS4, which is strange. The file direct streams and video and audio are both present. Is there any pattern among the files that exhibit this issue for you?

Thanks Moussa. That is strange. So far that is the only file I have found that has the issue. Everything else I’ve tried plays fine so far. The file also played fine on the previous ps4 plex app. All my files are the same format as well, mp4 with h.264 video and ac3 audio, so I can’t figure out why I am only having the issue with this one file. My ps4 model number is CUH-1215A if that helps. Is here any other info I can provide to help diagnose the problem?

Thanks! If you need logs or more properties of my setup I can provide them. I guess it has something to do with a full buffer or language (Since someone pointed out that switching to english System language helped him, it didn‘t for me tho, but I just trief PS4 not the Server too)
