Not having HDR is definitely a deal breaker. High bitrate videos play better on the PS4 Pro (with this new update) than my other player (LG OLED), but the colors are off without HDR support.
I also experienced some weird sound (clicking/stuttering) issues when EAC3 was enabled. When I disabled it, movies play fine.
The other must have, is DTS-X and Atmos passthru. It’s tough to have a solid experience without support for the high-end formats.
I haven’t watched anything yet and had the app crash 2/3 times on me.
PMS - 1.13.8.5388
PS Model - 01.81
App - 3.72.1.1
Glad there is collection support.
I mostly like the UI, here is my feedback:
Much easier to navigate quickly when looking at all movies/TV (in grid view).
Like the new season screen for TV shows, think it works much better than having a separate screen for episodes.
Would be nice to have a button at the before the first and after the last episodes to go to the next/previous season.
I preferred the old library screen with the sections that showed 5 items (1 big, 4 small). At the moment on my home screen I can only see 3 items (1 continue watching, 2 on deck) which leaves a lot of blank space.
Would like an option to hide sources option boxes (I only have one source).
I think TV shows in list view would be better if it used banners instead of the background image and text.
I like the Design as in Navigation. Which is an important part.
The music stays even when I go to Series etc.
Finally! Next Episode plays automatically, I can just hit next button and within the season it moves!
Con:
I think the colors of the GUI are a bit noisy and bright. I rather have a more “mature” design. (Maybe just my taste). Also the buttons on top could be nicer. With the buttons on top it feels more natural then before. But they are kinda big and ugly … (sorry)
Stability still seems not to be perfect. I’ve got a normal PS4 without anything done to it and it crashes from time to time. It could be partly the network which is atm kinda bad at my place (fiber gets installed) , but I used to have crashes in the past as well. All few hours. Sometimes even when playing and most times in navigation.
Download for Subtitiles I’ve not found yet. Hope that follows soon
Make sure the user can be memorized. I am the only one using the PS4, that way I could directly hop in and it is assured there is no misconduct.
When using a dolby true hd or dts hd master audio track on a 4k file on ethernet the movie plays at around 5 fps, when switching to lower quality audio it plays fine.
@Viperean No ETA yet. There are some platform issues that are preventing us from using it in production, but we are working with Sony to get them solved.
@WKV The PS4 will tonemap HDR to SDR. Is the audio being transcoded?
@LeGritche Unfortunately DTS pass-through is not supported for apps.
@Spittoon Yea season level actions are missing by design because of the UI implementation. Have you seen the Delete episodes after watching feature you can apply on a show by show basis?
@Blag24 Thanks for the feedback, it’s very useful! We will take those into account
@Dreadeus Thanks for the feedback too. Could you tell us what you were doing when the app crashed? On which screen, what had you just done etc. We plan to add Subtitles download support too. You are also able to already automatically sign in the last user in the app settings.
When using the " Universal Media Remote for PlayStation®4" which is the official PS4 remote (easier for the wife and kid) the remote times out from inactivity. When this happens, after re-syncing the remote to the PS4, the app no longer responds to the remote commands, yet the PS4 itself does. This often requires a restart of the PLEX app, and occasionally a restart of the PS4 itself.
Edit: Additional functionality of the buttons on this remote would be nice, such as the channel up and down buttons.
Liking the new UI so far. However, there is no support for mobile servers yet which is a crucial feature for me as more often than not I prefer watching synced content off of my phone rather than turning on the main PC server. Any chance of streaming from mobile servers being activated anytime soon? Would really appreciate it!
Also, the UI is somewhat laggy on the regular PS4 … by ‘somewhat’ I mean it works smoothly at times, and other times its so laggy that even the content that is being streamed has its audio/video out of sync and stutters, even when using a gigabit ethernet connection.
I also quite like the new interface. With two exceptions.
This is a biggy. I use to be able to pause the current playback by pressing the “options” button. It use to effectively work as a play/pause button (without entering the playback menu). Now however, it just exits playback. Please please can we have this function back! Being able to seemlessly pause and play with a single button and button press makes life so much smoother. (And it had the added benefit of working with my TV remote too.)
As previously mentioned by others, the interface is definetly much slower and more laggy than it use to be. This is on a standard PS4. I assume/hope this is because you are still ironing out the wrinkles in the beta
These are my only two niggles. Opinion wise, I’d like to be able to switch off the autoplay if I choose to. I’m also not a huge fan of the background (kinda looks like something from powerpoint 1997
I’m unable to use the new version at all. I select the option to “Enter Early Access”, the app restarts and loads for a while before giving this error:
The client is also completely unresponsive, so I can’t move the cursor or select buttons. Happens after force restarting as well, and reinstalling and re-opting in gives the same thing.
PMS version: 1.13.8.5395 (running in Docker on ArchARM)
PlayStation model: CUH-2202B
App version: 1.04 (shows 3.13.25 within the app before opting in)
Thank you for the update but where is PSVR support.
PS4 media player can’t play 3D movies directly from USB and DLNA. We need to put a 3d bluray disk to watch 3D movies. Only option now available is littlstar app. But every time it’s not working. We have to do lot of tweaks to run a 3D movie from USB.
Guys you already have plex client for PS4. If you give a update to work with PSVR it will be a game changer. Millions of PSVR owners struggling to watch 3D movies on PSVR.
Don’t give this feature for free plex client, activate it only with Plex pass. I’m pretty sure more people will buy Plex pass just only for watch 3D movies on PSVR.
I’m scared to try the beta, but curious. Are collections finally grouped together like on the web platform so when in MOVIES you can have all the “James Bond” films show in one “James Bond” collection instead of spread out on the timeline, as an example?
I hoping the guide will be better as a actual guide look like it is on my fire tv stick bc seeing this in beta in blocks it is right now is going backwards on the way it looked like since early versions when it was on pc webpage.
and the navigation is slow and watching live tv is also slow.
PS4 Pro. Hoping i can play one of my shows in this version bc it wouldn’t play my 1st audio, it would play my 2nd audio which that one had a special recording behind the scenes.
@mcrowel1 I’ll file this for investigation, thanks.
@Mjr_Oc3lot Thanks for the feedback. We’re working on performance improvements where possible.
@WKV Not that I’m aware of, but would be something to raise with the PMS team.
@AJBhatti We are hoping to support mobile servers in the future. As for the issue you mentioned, were you running any other software on your PS4 while using the app?
@TMas7er We’re looking at tweaking the key shortcuts. Performance improvements is also something we’re looking at. You can already disable autoplay from the app settings menu
@ZephireNZ Are you able to reach this server securely on other platforms? Strange that you cannot move focus when this happens, will look into it
@Anuruddha We have no plans for PSVR support at this time. Lets get this new app shipped and then we can look further ahead
@russbgrant Nothing to be scared of! And yes collections are fully supported
It plays very well with high bandwith file… previous version could only play files in remote servers @ 3mbps, now with the beta version i could play @ 8 mbps.
@Moussa I’m able to access the server without any issues through https://app.plex.tv/desktop, and through the IP directly (via http or https and ignore the certificate error). The PS4 is on the same LAN as my PC.
Interestingly even on the older version when I first log in it only connects via indirect, then later will connect normally.
I just tried enabled always allow insecure as per @Dreadeus and that actually seems to have worked - when I check “Media Server Status” it has the green lock next to my server, so I’m assuming it’s still connecting securely.
