Plex for PlayStation 4 v2 beta

@BrazMan Glad to hear it :slightly_smiling_face:

@ZephireNZ Certificate error? That sounds suspicious. Are you using your own cert or reverse proxying your server? Glad it’s working now but interested to understand the behaviour.

No that’s normal, it’s using the standard plex.direct certificate, which of course doesn’t match the IP address:

Ah I see. Not sure why the PS4 would fail to connect to the server securely, logs might reveal something.

I have the EAC3 checkmark in settings but server still is showing it being transcoded to AAC. Known issue or am I missing something?

no mention of bug fixes?

@ApexAftermath could you enable logging in the app and post some server logs here?

@ataribaby It’s a brand new app so many bugs in the existing app no longer exist or don’t apply here. Trying to list them all would be a fruitless exercise.

I thought I’d give this a go as i don’t use my PS4 for watching stuff on, i have a few Amlogic devices for that.
The app is really slow, sometimes taking a couple of seconds for stuff to load.
The 720p resolution on a 4k TV looks terrible, like really bad.
Tried playing a file with AAC 7.1 audio that the app transcodes to EAC3 7.1 and all you hear is a clicking noise, same problem with TrueHD+Atmos 7.1 (maybe it’s just 7.1 in general) . AAC 5.1 direct streams fine, EAC3 5.1 also fine
1080p HEVC main 10 okay. I can’t tell if 4k HEVC HDR 10 is playing badly because the PS4 can’t handle it or because the crappy job its doing on the audio is messing things up

I only tested for a short time and a handful of files but over all it’s not the best. I never used the previous app so i can’t tell how bad or worse it is compared

EDIT: ok so i played another file with DTS-HD 7.1 and it transcodes that to AAC 5.1 and plays fine

this one all i hear is clicking and a choppy video playback

@Moussa, I gave it a try and love the look of it! I had it crash once when using a playlist, but a reset seems to have “fixed” it. (I find my PS4 randomly crashes with other apps too, so I’m sure what others reported more in depth is sufficient.)

With the previous plex app, I found that fast forwarding/skimming with the controler D-Pad was very fluid, but with this build it stutters and I’ve had the movie hang a few times, with PLEX seemingly confuse. Skipping ahead with the L1 and R1 shoulder buttons seems to work fine.

One suggestion: I love that when we select a title to view, we can click on the cast members and see if we have more films from them in our collection. Would it be possible to add a “DIRECTOR” field? That would be the more useful one for me and I presume other film fans with large libraries.

Other than that, it’s everything I hoped for! Great job!

For whatever reason, I cannot get any audio from any media with the beta version. The files play normally in the original PS4 player, but as soon as I switch all I get is the system noises when moving the cursor, no other audio plays. Video works without issue.

Great news! Is auto-play for TV-shows available?

Yes! kinda important

I just want to report that for us, the beta eliminates the buffering problem. Thank you.

@anothername Thanks for the logs, much appreciated! The app shouldn’t be transcoding to EAC3, we’ll fix that. Improving performance and the resolution is also definitely on our list of things to do, but first we want to get the app to a stable place.

@russbgrant Thanks for the feedback. A director field would be indeed be cool, I’ll file that internally. Regarding seeking, we’ll look into that. We’re planning to make some tweaks to the seeking UI.

@Clowbog Could you post some server logs after enabling logging in the app?

@joeldeluxe94 Yes!

@ataribaby Glad to hear it!

During music playback, the counter alignment (text of progress and total track length) keeps shifting while it is keeping track of the track progress. As if it is attempting to keep the text left or right justified. Little annoying. I not referring to the whole screen flipping on its axis.

Thanks, have filed that internally for us to look at.

Not a problem specifically with the beta, but the problem isn’t resolved.

PS4 Pro - video stops to buffer every 5-10 seconds, making content unwatchable.

Everything streams fine on all of my other devices.

If I go to my Plex server through the PS4 web browser, everything plays fine.

I’ve played with every setting, both in the app, and on my Plex Server, nothing fixes the problem.

This is super frustrating, I can use my PS4 as a media box for all other content, but if I want to watch anything on Plex, I have to plug my Macbook into the TV, since I have little interest in using the PS4 web browser to access Plex.

I really hope that you fix this problem. If there’s any information that I can provide to help you debug the issue, I’d be happy to help.

Could we get some logs @CrowleyAJ? Make sure to enable logging in the app first.

Sure thing, I’ve put them on Dropbox so you can grab them:

Please let me know when you have it @Moussa, so that I can take it down, thanks!

Thanks @CrowleyAJ. Would you mind grabbing fresh logs with verbose logging disabled? There’s too much noise with that setting enabled that makes parsing the logs difficult. Also it doesn’t appear to me that logging within the PlayStation 4 app itself was enabled. You can find it in Settings -> Privacy -> Log to Media Server.
