It’s great that the new UI update has lyrics but where did the ability to rate music files go? I can’t find it in the new interface at all. This is a critical feature for me as a DJ to be able to sample my incoming music and prepare it for future sets.
I’m not quite sure where you’re missing it… maybe you can share a screenshot?!
I have just checked this in Plex for Mac which is supposed to use the same layout. There, the ratings are right there in the track list of my albums (track #, track title, rating, duration)
(1) rated track
(2) unrated track
(3) hovering over the track shows the option to rate the track
During playback, the track can be rated under the track/album name section, next to the displayed time/duration:
Ok, so the issue is that in Plex Player for Windows the rating is hidden and missing if there is not a rating on the track already. See below:
However, now that I know where the hidden track rating area is, moving the mouse over it will make it appear and then I can rate the track. Once it has a rating it will always show.
Whomever made the decision to hide the rating thing made a big mistake. It isn’t good UI design to hide things from people and make them have to find it. You have to linger for a long time in that exact spot for it to show up, so I just believed that the feature was removed from the UI.
Can we please make this go back to showing the five dots for unrated tracks? If not showing them all the time, can we at a minimum have them show up whenever the mouse is over any part of the playbar?
It appears that the same design decision, to remove the rating display if it has no rating in the playbar, was made for the Plex Web players as well. I’d request that the five dots be shown instead like previously to help avoid confusion for people.
However, I’m not seeing ratings in either Plex Web or Plex for Windows in the play queue. I’m fairly confident that it used to be shown here and when I was working my way through a play queue I could rate the tracks as I went. Now I don’t see anything but empty space. Hovering over the empty space doesn’t bring up the rating button either.
Example below:
Would it be possible to have the Play Queue look similar to the track listing under the album (like in your screenshot)? I work with lots of individual tracks as a DJ and don’t often look at the album screen.
There’s been no design decision to drop ratings…
They’re working fine on my entire system using different clients on the same machine and across my devices. No matter if the item has a rating or not (in that case I just get a neutral “zero stars” display).
Do you get the same mistake if you open Plex on a different account (or using a different browser)?. It almost sounds like there’s some kind of blocker preventing the rating section from being displayed.
btw… you do notice that the example screenshot is actually showing the rating of that song?
As for the play queue… no, you cannot change how that is being displayed. All you can do from within the play queue is remove tracks from the queue or change to a different track.
“Zero stars” used to show five dots instead of being hidden completely from view. It should go back to showing the five dots so that it’s known the track hasn’t been rated, or at a minimum the five dots should be displayed as soon as you move your cursor over the ENTIRE playbar. Right now you have to know exactly where the rating is and move your cursor over it to be seen. THIS IS BAD UI DESIGN. I had thought the ratings were removed because there was no way to see them other than having advanced knowledge of where exactly to put your cursor and allow it to stay there long enough for the control to show up and become available.
The play queue list should be updated to be the same as the track listing under an album. This would provide access to ratings for individual tracks that don’t have albums (common in EDM) and show other helpful information.
It’s really annoying that Plex doesn’t have an actual bug tracker / feature request tracker.
This thread has basically identified a UI design flaw that should be fixed. There has been no response from anyone at Plex, so there is no way to know if anyone at Plex is even aware of the issue, or if it has been assigned for follow-up / fixing.
I expect that this thread is just going to get locked and never acted upon or acknowledged by anyone at Plex which really isn’t any for of customer support. There should at least be some way to report this as a PlexPass user since we are paying customers.
just because no one specifically from plex responds to any particular thread, doesn’t mean that it isn’t seen or tracked as necessary.
tom above is a moderator, so that is about an official response for you, and if he deems necessary he will forward upstream and/or attempt to gather more details, and any plex dev will respond themselves if they have need or desire to.
