Why does this happen, when will it be fixed? if Plex does launch, as soon as I play media it will crash either instantly or upon jogging the media to a different part, say 1 minute ahead or anything really. Using latest player and server software on windows 11.
Server keeps running and is not the problem, plex plays fine on phones tablets and chromecasts
Plex for Windows version? Available via Authorized Devices.
If still using 1.34, download and install the latest update from plex.tv (Apps & Devices, bottom of this page).
Nope, I’m using the latest version. Uninstalled and re-installed has no effect. as soon as you try to seek it will almost immediately crash. If you try to re-launch the player it will also most likely crash as it is trying to reload what it was playing before.
I was on Windows 10 Pro until tonight. Plex for Windows version 1.34 and newer has crashes immediately on launch for me. Tonight, after updating to Windows 11, I updated Plex for Windows to it’s newest version (1.38.0.2734-ec4489fe). Same thing. You launch it, you get to the Plex slash screen… immediate crash. Only way I can get it to work is if i roll it back to a old installer I have (1.25)
That is a known issue. There is a problem with the auto-update process in 1.34. When you launch 1.34, it checks for a newer version, finds one, then crashes instead of downloading the update. This was fixed in 1.35 and later versions.
Maybe a compatibility issue with Windows 11? I’m running the same version on Windows 10 and it is stable. I’ve no Win11 systems with which to test.
Would you be able to share the 1.25 installer on Google Drive or something?
Downloaded Version 1.25 from Filehippo and you’re right, no crashes on Windows 11.
HDR codec isn’t as good, you get those little black specks sometimes. But at least it works for now.
PLEX SUPPORT I hope you’re listening. I JUST payed for PLEX PASS Lifetime and This isn’t what I payed in for. Windows 11 isn’t new and it isn’t going away. I want this to work.
Sorry, maybe I didn’t explain well enough.
Any version 1.3x crashes instantly on launch regardless of my OS. It did it on Windows 10, it continued to do it on Windows 11. Doesn’t matter what version of Windows I run, any variant of Plex for Windows v.1.3x will crash instantly on launch.
To better define “instantly”. The windows open, you get the Plex splash screen for the app… then it just simply closes.
No windows message saying it became unresponsive or anything. Just it’s open one second… and closed the next.
The only solution is to uninstall, and reinstall version 1.25.
Also, should note, this system is running an intel i7 7700k, 16GB 3200mhz DDR4 ram, and a couple of Samsung 970 NVME drives. No GPU as i just use the iGPU on the CPU. This is literally just used for Plex streaming on my TV. Just an old repurposed barebones system.
I’m running i7-11700K, 64gb 3200mhz ddr4, wd black 750 ssd, NO GPU as well just using iGPU.
For me instantly crashing means as soon as you try to play back any video, sd or HD or 4K, usually plays fine at first but as soon as you seek the video to a different point it crashes. version 1.25 allows seeking any video type endlessly without crashing.
Yea, v 1.25 is the goat version
Version 1.39 which was release Dec 8 still has the same problem. Back to the old version i go… F*** Plex why can’t you make software which doesn’t crash instantly.
Why is this still an Issue, I cannot use any version of Plex Media Player later than 1.29 without it crashing instantly.
Please advise. I am a Plex Pass Subscriber.
Try a complete uninstall, reboot, re-install.
- Uninstall the software via Windows Control Panel → Programs & Features
- If it exists, delete the application directory (default C:\Program Files\Plex\Plex)
- Delete
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex
. Note that%LOCALAPPDATA%\
is hidden by default. Go to the View tab in Windows Explorer and check the box next to “Hidden Items” to make it visible. - Delete registry keys with Windows Registry Editor. On my system it is HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\plex.tv\Plex.
- Reboot your PC.
- Download & install the current version from plex.tv.
Note that Plex uses %LOCALAPPDATA% and HKCU\SOFTWARE for multiple products. If you are running other Plex software on the same system you may want to create a backup of the registry and directory areas first.
I downloaded the newest version (1.39) today on a new PC and I’m experiencing constant crashes every time I play some media. The video goes for about a minute and then freezes or crashes the entire app.
Good luck, we never even got a response to outside of the one or two you see from a while back on why anything post version 1.25 crashes immediately on launch.
At this point, it’s safe to assume Plex recognizes there is an issue, has no clue what it is, and is choosing the “If we don’t acknowledge it, it doesn’t exist.” approach.
Thank you so much! I’ve been digging deep to try to find a solution to my problem. Have been using the browser because the app wouldn’t launch but this solved it! Thanks again.
