Plex for Windows turns off subtitles repeatedly

I have the same issue on Plex for Mac (latest version). Switching to the web app is a viable workaround until they can fix this issue.

When this happens, is Plex player running in the foreground (and thus has the “focus”)?
Or is it just playing on a part of the screen, while another app is used in the foreground?

Are there gaming controllers plugged in?

No gaming controllers. I can say that I am often watching Plex full screen while I have a Chrome PIP window on top. But I don’t believe it happens exclusively in that situation.

I’ve had this issue happen when Plex loses focus when I alt tab to my browser.

Plex is not full screen and my browser isn’t full screen. I’m not watching any video content on the browser. Happens even after 10-30s of being alt tabbed but not all the time. The subs seem to turn off both when the video is still playing in the background or when it’s paused. The audio stream also says none when this happens.

Not sure how to reproduce this 100% of the time.

Happened in Ghosts.2019.S04E01.Happy.Holiday.1080p.AMZN.WEB-DL.DDP5.1.H.264-NTb.mkv around 9min onward but this has happened to me a bunch more times here and there.

Let me know if you need anything from me, I don’t really browse these forums so not sure what you guys usually ask for.

Please enable Debug level logging in your Desktop app settings. Reproduce the issue and share your PMS logs and your Desktop app logs. Please.

I’m happy to enable logging (and have done so), but I am not able to reproduce the issue on demand. As soon as it happens again, I will see what the logs look like and perhaps share a shortened version rather than days worth of logging.

They just turned off. I was a little gray on exactly which files you need, but I know where to get these now.

Happened again. Seems to have something to do with…

Yes. I have this same issue. Seems to happen around the same time, every 15-20mins. I’ve also noticed sometimes if I pause and resume the subtitles will turn off.

Just wanted to chime in and say I’m another user experiencing this. It’s been happening on and off for a few months, but more the past month or so.

Subtitles keep turning themselves off on desktop app? : PleX (reddit.com)

I made this thread on reddit some time ago, and it’s had a fairly consistent dribble of other people who have been annoyed by this bug. One of them pointed out this thread also existed.

It’s been going on for about a month now. If more logs are needed please tag me.

Same here, been driving me absolutely nuts. This problem started about a month ago in the web player and desktop app, both on Mac and Windows. Just tried a new plex server install with only the com.plexapp.plugins.library.db transferred over and still experience the same issue. Happy to provide logs if still needed.

I’ve had this problem for a few months now. Additonal info: sometimes when the subtitles first disappear i click the settings button on the player and it kicks me out of whatever i’m watching. doesn’t seem to matter if it’s SRT or PGS subtitles. it also has happend when the player is paused for and extended period of time. I have found a workaround that only works sometimes: play the content with subtitles enabled, stop the player and close and reopen plex and then resume. This has fixed the problem for me multiple times but not always.

I have noticed that this problem most happens when the plex server is doing a large intro scan for a new season dump. I don’t see any errors during this time that should cause the two to be related.

I have this problem as well.

I downloaded the link and installed it. It was a very pleasant surprise to discover that indeed my subtitles kept playing… Hope that they can make this part of a future release.

I also have been experiencing this bug. It’s wildly annoying. Any way to mitigate it?

This issue has been driving me crazy for ages, thank you erikj and Tiebierius! trying the downgraded version and good so far, sticking with this for the forseeable future

Just got updated to 1.61.1.3432-3929cb60… Still the same result. First it disabled the subs when I hopped back 10 sec, then three times in a 23 min episode just for fun. They are really disabled then aka you can reenable them in the player settings. Sometimes they do not reenable though. One of the three times I had to stop the playback and then continue from main menu to get them back. As no further logs was asked for after the logs were posted once, I guess you have a clue what to do and what is broken? C’mon guys, TALK to us. Thx

Ah and while we are at it. How about a lil feature request? A checkbox to easily disable auto updates forever. Every time I get a not asked for update I fear a complete loss of functionality! Be honest, that already happened more than once. ^^
