Plex for Xbox One plays some .mkv files, but not others.

The question explains the problem as a whole. Plex will play some .mkv files but not others. I don’t know if I should be posting this in the Xbox One forum, or the server forum. Really don’t understand why its doing this considering it will play certain .mkv files but not others. Any ideas?

What happens when you try and play them?

The first place to check would be your Plex Server logs which can be found using this support article:
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200250417-Plex-Media-Server-Log-Files

My first two guesses would be:

  1. The server you’re using is unable to transcode and the mkv’s that are not playing require a transcode/remux

  2. The transcoder is erroring out which is causing the app to fail to playback the file because it is expecting a transcoded stream and not getting anything.

The logs will help clarify what the exact issue is though.

It just says that the server is unavailable, which it completely is because it will play any other file, and even some other .mkv. I will work on getting a log of the error and posting it shortly. Thanks in advance to anyone who can provide any insight.

Nobody can provide any insight without more information like your Plex Media Server.log. Without any information all we can do is guess at what is causing your issue.

The server is unavailable screen when trying to playback files is almost always caused by a transcoding error which will be in your server logs. But without seeing your log, we cannot do much to try and help you.

I am having a similar issue. I can provide logs if needed. Some files will play and some when are selected just stay on a black screen. No buffering wheel, no nothing. The videos work on all my other devices. It is just the Xbox One. I feel like I’ve seen this issue for a while now, but there are not a whole lot of solutions that don’t require you to downgrade the video quality.

The only recent known issue of the black screen is with the 1st beta version of the DVR client. The main solution was to upgrade to at least version 2 of the beta program.

But if that is not the case then your server logs will be helpful in starting the diagnosis. Other than that it might be needed to produce a sample of the file that reproduces the issue for the developers to try and diagnose further.
