Figured I’d add my own complaints to the pile. LG C19. Have been using Plex on it for years, and it seems that it has only gotten worse performance-wise. I’ve got a number of other streaming apps installed (Netflix, Hulu, Peacock, Apple+). Without exception, they all load quickly and navigation is plenty smooth. Plex, on the other hand takes 20+ seconds to open, and then navigation is laggy and slow. Playback is just fine, mind you. I can play titles with dolby vision, 4k, DTS, all no problem. It’s simply that the app is horribly optimized. Plex on my other devices is just fine - Android (phone and tablet), a Google TV and a Hisense Google TV.
I’d simply rather not have to purchase another bit of hardware to get a better experience with my main TV, but it seems that Plex refuses to actually do anything based on the threads and comments.
So, in the end, is there someone working on this very slow webOS plex gui???, I do have a 2024 lg tv, and the plex app becomes unusable after a couple of minutes(1-2 minutes) of browsing through my library…so now I ask again, will this issue be solved in the near future???
Looks lovely! But will it run smoothly if it’s gone even more visually rich?
I will happily beta test on LG TV and Android mobile if it can be run alongside the current app.
I hope the new app’s release in early 2025 will resolve all these issues! I’d also be glad to beta test it if they release the preview on Tizen at some point.
I agree the WebOS app has serious memory management problems with large libraries. It not only slows/freezes the Plex app, but screws up the entire TV experience. I have to turn the TV off sometimes by removing power to get things to reset.
The PLEX Smart TV app slows/freezes because it does not have proper optimizations.
Yes, you cannot expect an app to load everything you throw at it, but a good programmer can make the application to be light and fast even with less computing power.
For example… Netflix, Amazon Prime, Apple TV+, Hulu, Crackle, Paramount+, Pluto TV and many others have massive libraries and the theme loading/refresh time is a lot faster than the one in the PLEX application.
OVERVIEW: The person who is in charge of the PLEX Smart TV app needs to stop adding new functionality and focus on the optimization of the code.
Weird that you don’t have any playback problems, then it must be something related to my LG 32 inch smart TV, I don’t know which version of webOS you are using though.
But anyway, does anyone know when the new Plex smart TV app will be launched for webOS? I hope it will somehow solve all of the problems that we reported, wouldn’t that be nice.
I completely agree with you, it’s a matter of good software design, and Plex being a much smaller company than Amazon and Netflix is NOT a good excuse.
Yes, same over here, I never have to close other smart TV apps, but I often have to do this with Plex, which also might be related to other apps still being in memory, but again, it’s a matter of how you design the app/software, so again no excuse.
Agree with both of you. Plex app is really sluggy. Compare this with the good old “Orca-app”, that one was REAL snappy, A LOT easier and convenient too use.
The Plex app is overloaded with all kind of bs im not interested in what so ever.
So, we are in 2025 and there is still no news? Has Plex officially dropped support for Samsung and LG?
What should we do? Should I buy an Apple TV? Some mention the alternative client “Infuse”? Does anyone have experience and on which platforms is it supported?
Apple TV at present will not resolve your issue on it own. There is Beta testing of a new Player which is very promising.
What you could do is take a year subscription for Infuse ($10), link to your PMS and if you like fast interaction with apps purchase a Apple TV 4K 128Gb. Of cause your internet connection will determine how reliable this will work.
Now having said that, recently I purchase a LG OLED G4 for my mother and the Plex app was significantly quicker than a previous model LG. Do make sure your Router, TV and PMS machine are using a quality DNS.
Example: 1.1.1.1
As most ISP DNS will let you down with International connections.
