Plex & HDhomerun. Do I need to subscribe to their DVR service?

Hello,
I’m in the process of creating a set up that will allow me to record shows. I have the Nvidia shield TV and. Plex pass. Now I need a TV tuner and HDhomerun seems to be a popular option… Couple quick questions

Do I need to subscribe to the HDhomerun DVR service? Or can Plex record with the HDhomerun on its own. No DVR service required

Is it recommended to have the hardware transcoding feature from HDhomerun. Or do you think my Nvidia show TV will be just fine.

No, no Homerun DVR sub needed but you must be a plex pass user (which it says above that you are).

I use Plex for the DVR - but they’ve had issues with the guide recently, much improved now - but for live tv I use either the HDHomerun app or the LiveTV app on my nvidia shield.
