Plex identifying different shows as the same

Server Version#: 1.25.3.5409-f11334058
Player Version#: Multiple

My issue is somewhat specific, but in an era of remakes, reboots, etc., it is one that I am sure will come up more often.

I have media for two different shows:

  • The 4400 (2004)
  • 4400 (2021)

Plex Dance and other efforts have failed to compel the server to correctly identify these as two different shows. I cannot Split the episodes being identified, I cannot even get a header for the second show so that I can correctly identify it. As soon as I add the second show, it is dovetailed into the first incorrectly. I am pretty much at my wit’s end with this.

Every episode of both shows had already been renamed to include the years.

Interesting. I’d never seen about including the tvdb numbers. I will try that and see what happens. That seems like it would be very helpful, especially as this is something others have struggled with regarding the same content. My bad for not thinking to search specifically for the show title on the forum.

Edit: We were updating at the same time…

The TVDB/TMDB IDs really help with reboots, spinoffs, etc. You can also add IMDB/TMDB IDs for movie files. The docs have the details. Be sure and use curly brackets, {…}.

Name and organize the shows as shown in the thread I linked.

Add the TVDB/TMDB ID to the folder name for each show, then Plex Dance both shows, returning them to the Plex library one at a time.

See Plex DocumentationYour MediaNaming & Organizing Your TV Show Files for additional details.
