It’s clear that some hubris is in the works at Plex with these navigation design changes. People who either have ulterior motives other than an actually good user experience or they aren’t capable of understanding.
These changes will not have the result you intend. You have one exploitable base right now and that’s your existing LONG TIME users/customers. You think you are appealing to some new dynamic, some new market, you are not. Your design is bad for EVERYONE not just your existing customers. It’s highly dysfunctional, laborious and extremely clunky. You’ve forgotten rule number 1 of good UX Design changes…it has to improve the user experience not make it worse.
You could have left the side navigation bar and added new sections or an “extra” section across the top. But you chose not to. You think that a media library interface can be the same as a media box interface, it cannot! They are not the same.
All you’ve done is alienate your existing base, extravagantly. That is your only base right now and you are lucky that many of them already paid for lifetime subscriptions.
Hire some actually decent UX designers. Lose the egos, admit you screwed up, and fix it. We were loyal but that’s vanishingly thin right now. Word of mouth is a big thing and you’ve pretty much lost it at this point.
