Plex incorrectly identifying TV episodes

The Plex Dance is not about missing media.

You are mixing movies and series in the same library.

Hi,

Yep, my issue was mixing media. Part of the problem is that it seems that recorded TV has to go in movies, it's not detected properly in TV Shows ... :(.

One question ... for items that don't seem to be found in TVDB, they don't show up at all. But TVDB is not perfect - so how to have these items still show up (perhaps with just the filename)?

Thanks!

Items that cannot be found in the online databases shoulds go into a Home Video library. There, no metadata are even tried to download.

Hi,

Sorry, just trying to understand ... does this happen automatically, or do I have to create two libraries, both pointing to the same directory? I admit, it is a bit confusing then to have some items in both ... :(

Thanks!

You can try to do that.

Sadly, if there is no 'intelligent' script which makes better filenames and sorts your recording into different folders, you'll have to make do with the current approach.

Those scripts exist for certain recorders. Rummage through the scanners and metadata developer subforums. Maybe there is one for you.

There is probably additional 3rd party software which can help you. (Like, for instance 'MCEbuddy' for Windows Media Center recordings)

Will do, thanks. It seems that if the item isn't found in TVDB then I need to move it (via script perhaps) ... I admit, not quite sure how to check that, but will look.

Thanks!

Today Plex pulled in NCIS S13 E15 as NCIS: Los Angles, which doesn’t even have a a season 13. I’ve done the dance 3 times now and it’s still miss-tagged. The filename matches the required convention and I put it in the correct folder structure right from the start. It refuses to put this in the correct show and season.

@Muzak Don’t know if it is related, but there was mention of Plex caching some bad data from The TVDB. Here is link to that.

Is the TVDB still having problems? I recently had the same issue as some others with The Flash (2014) being identified incorrectly, which has been fixed on my end. Now I have an issue where metadata for Doctor Who (2005) is not being downloaded at all, and the existing metadata disappeared.

It’s rather annoying to be honest.

*Edit: I’ve also done the dance several times as well, and still no dice.

Hello! I can’t get to the Clean Bundles option as the little cog symbol is not where the instructions say it should be?

This is where the Plex’s instructions say it should be (please see attached global_library_actions.png).
And this is what is looks like for me (Screen Shot 2016-04-08 at 16.46.50).

Am I at the wrong place?

Thanks!!

I think that image is a little out of date… the clean bundles function under the cog is a little lower in the left pane and, frankly, is a pain in the A$$ to hit sometimes 'cause it’s not visible until you roll over it.

Keep looking… you’ll find it.

Move your mouse pointer over the text ‘LIBRARIES’. then click on the ellipsis ( . . . )

Awesome, thank you!

It’d be great if the guide could be updated accordingly, as it’s not quite easy to find.

Perhaps you renamed the files to a conforming name schema only after they were already (incorrectly) matched.

If this is the case, you still need to perform the ‘Plex Dance™’ to erase their checksums from the plex database.

  1. move all files for the show out of ‘sight’ of plex

  2. update library (‘not force update’ not ‘Refresh all’)

  3. empty trash

  4. clean bundles

  5. double check naming schema and move files back

  6. update library

in this order

Thanks a lot ! It works for me, I’ll remember this tip.

Hi,

So I’m experiencing the same problem.
I’ve checked TheTVDB for matching records. Checked that my containing directory is named appropriately.
The files themselves follow the ‘correct’ structure: [name of show] - [episode #].
Other shows follow the same structure and are correctly matched.
These particular files though (there are eight) are all identified as episode 0 in plex.
I’ve completed the Plex Dance, to no success.

Any other ideas on how to solve this?
Thanks.

I hate to bring this up, but:
A TV Show Library/
…Show Name - Episode #.xxx

is not correct.

A TV Show Library/
…Show Name/
…Season 01/
…Show Name - S01E01.xxx

would be correct.

Fix your name and structure and re-enter the Dance Floor…

If you share this mystery show name I will test it for you to make sure it works as intended.

Correct structure also includes season. Not following Plex’s naming guide can and most likely will produce inconsistent results. Need to make sure you do it correct for each item. FileBot is what I use to simplify the process.

Naming ‘Series’ & ‘Season’ Based TV Shows.

Hi @JuiceWSA,

Thanks for the reminder.

The show I am referring to is Mob Psycho 100.
Usually I omit the season numbering because of how anime can be structured - seems to work with most shows that only started airing within the last 12 months.

Either way, just restructured with a season name (which I think means the content is now perfectly accurate against TVDB).

Thanks for helping me test.
Looking forward to hearing back from you.

@astrofisher may also be on the case, but…:

A TV Show Library
…Mob Psycho 100
…Season 01
…Mob Psycho 100 - S01E01 - Self-Proclaimed Psychic Reigen Arataka And Mob.mp4

gets an instant fully populated match… including episode thumb that was troublesome until the latest public update:
Version 1.1.3.2700
working as intended here…

@JuiceWSA
Thanks for the help.
Didn’t rename the files before - guess I need to start doing that.

Curious to know why some files with the original file name (i.e. inclusive of fansubber group name and resolution) work flawlessly, but Mob Psycho, in particular requires a rename to work.

Either way, Plex has registered that there are eight episodes now.
Thanks again!
