I’ve been using Plex for years, and have set up my server quite purposefully. I have a lifetime Plex Pass, specifically because I’ve been enjoying the service for a while.
However, recently, with no further changes to my config, my Plex apps stopped working. They would just buffer forever and eventually stop. This applied to all devices in my home, two Android devices and two Android TV instances. The same issue is also there when casting media.
After quite a lot of debugging I figured out that my Plex instance actually works fine - as long as you are on my local network with cable or connecting remotely. All the issues on my Android device can be fixed by disconnecting from Wi-Fi, and connecting over 5G. Connecting my PC over Wi-Fi rather than cable also causes issues immediately. So the issues are only there on the local network wirelessly.
In a rigorous attempt to fix this I’ve factory reset my entire router, as well as the Plex instances (I kept my media), and the problems were still there. I’ve googled and tried a lot, but I cannot figure out what could be causing this.
Some info about my set-up.
- I have an Intel NUC, running Proxmox, with Plex in an LXC. The LXC settings are from this script. Specs of the machine are more than enough.
- My media is hosted on a mounted network share on a Synology NAS. This is how my set up has been running (succesfully) for a long time. Connection between NAS & NUC is wired and very fast.
- Hardware acceleration is available and activated.
- Router is a Unifi Dream Router.
- All devices (both wireless and wired) are on the same subnet, and are in the same IP range.
- This is not a guest network, client isolation is not activated and I can access all other local apps via Wifi. Just Plex is giving trouble.
- The problems came out of nowhere, I didn’t update Plex or do anything else to the server when the issues started appearing.
- I know there’s no issues with media access between my Plex Server and my media files, since everything works when accessing the same server wired or externally.
- When using the app, data sorta loads, but incredibly slow. Artwork loads halfway frequently. When streaming, I see half a poster for a few minutes and then get a “check your network” error.
- When attempting to load from an app that doesn’t work, the server dashboard shows nothing, so I can’t figure out what type of streaming it’s doing.
By now I’ve tried about every setting that makes sense to me, toggled them all on and off, and even reset all installations. So it looks like I’ve ran out of ideas.
Anybody with some more insights - tips would be appreciated!
