I’ll start by saying I’ve had Plex running for years and my Unifi setup was stable until a month or two ago. Also I’ve been in IT for 20 years, so I feel like an idiot for not figuring out WTF is going on. Also, while my post below is focused on the Ubiquiti setup, that’s because it’s the only thing I’m aware of changing recently. However given all my LOCAL devices have the same issue and none of them should be affected by any of the Ubiquiti setup since they are all on the same subnet and connected via ethernet, I’m leaning towards some sort of Plex issue going on.
About 3 weeks back, I added a U6-LR-AP to my network, which previously had two nanoHDs and one UDM. The UDM was on 1.8.6.2969 and all 3 APs were on 5.4.23.12533. That afternoon, a friend of mine who streams from my plex server told me they were having trouble connecting - streaming anything from their TV would just hang and never play. Everything seemed fine on my end, and I think they said they were having this issue before I added the new AP that day, but I can’t be sure.
From my home I tried to stream using my iPhone connected to my primary LAN, which is the same network the Plex server (running on a Linux box) is on. Locally I would get the same thing on my phone (spinning circle but nothing plays), though accessing it via the Plex web client on my desktop (which is hard-wired via ethernet) worked fine, as did my NVidia shield (also connected via ethernet).
Today I tried to stream via my NVidia shield and now it hangs in the same fashion. Nothing in my library will play. My desktop and phone both hang too.
NAS/Plex, phone, desktop, nvidia shield are all on 192.168.1.0/24. All were working previously.
I’ve spent quite a bit of timing examining my Ubiquiti and Plex settings, rolling back to my config from 3/1 (before I added the U6-LR-AP), disabling the U6-LR-AP, etc. I’ve temporarily disabled DPI, Threat Management, and the local firewall policies. I’ve temporarily enabled UPNP, tried enabling/disabling IGMP snooping, IGMP v3, etc. Thus far no changes I’ve made seem to fix this.
Note: For the last month or so my wife and kids have been occasionally complaining about a few of their devices performing poorly or occasionally disconnecting. We have one laptop which seems to have it happen more often. I’d assumed it was not a big deal, though over the weekend I did move to the NanoHD firmware 5.43.34.12682. This seems unlikely to be the cause of the above issues since I literally have an ethernet-only setup for Plex.
Topology below.
Desktop → (ethernet) → old Linksys 24 port switch → (ethernet) → UDM port 1 → UDM port 4 → (ethernet) → NAS
Happy to supply lots of logs but I’m not really sure where to start. I have plex set to debug level, so I have a ton of data I can supply. From what I can tell it looks like Plex is trying to stream to my client, but I’m just not seeing the data.
