Plex iOS unable to download media over cellular connection

Server Version#: Windows 1.24.1.4931
Player Version#: iOS 7.22

When attempting to download media remotely, over cellular connection, the media item is added to the download list and says ‘downloading’ next to it, but the progress bar never moves. However, when the same steps are reproduced over wifi (also remotely), the download proceeds as expected.

  • This happens with both the new Downloads functionality and the old Mobile Sync functionality.
  • This is a consistent issue (reproduces every time and for every media type when the steps described are followed)
  • ‘Use Celular Data’ is always enabled in the iOS app.
  • Separate log dumps and screen shots, showing the downloads not working over cellular and working over WiFi, are attached:
    – [1. iOS & Server logs showing Downloads not working over Cellular.zip|attachment] (4.9 MB)
    – [1. iOS Screenshots showing Downloads not working over Cellular.zip|attachment] (300.5 KB)
    – [2. iOS & Server logs showing Downloads working over WiFi.zip|attachment] (4.1 MB)
    – [2. iOS Screenshots showing Downloads working over WiFi.zip|attachment] (282.4 KB)

Would appreciate any help on this one. Thank you

Edit: problem solved (see below), so logs removed to avoid sharing sensitive data.

Solved: For some reason, my network provider (EE in the UK) is blocking downloads from my Plex server when the server is configured with Secure connections ‘disabled’ (although strangely, Plex downloads on my Mac were working fine when tethering to my phone).

I tested with other network providers and cellular downloads were working. Also, they worked when using a VPN on my phone.

The solution for me was to change Settings → Network → Secure connections to ‘Preferred’ on my Plex Server.

Hope this helps someone.
