Hello all...I need some help here as forgive me being new to all of this I perhaps will omit certain things that others would include. Also let me say that I am running plex server on an Imac and being new to macs as well it is presenting some challanges to me.
1st.. I have installed plex server and client onto the Imac
2nd..I have installed channels etc via the plex interface on the Mac
3rd..I have changed the DNS server address to reflex the Ip of the Mac running the software
4th..When I go to trailers..I get a loading circle and then am told they cannot be accessed and to try later
5th..as this is loading the interface pulls up on the mac and the ATV remote operates the interface on the Mac
I have unplugged the ATV as suggested in other threads to no avail
I have restated router,Mac etc to no avail.
Please can someone please give me a push in the right direction to get this to work on my ATV?
I have downloaded and am running plex media server from plex downloads..as with much of this stuff newbies such as myself none of this make sense so I see the link you have sent me to but have no idea what to use and how to use it
Sorry for the small text in the earlier reply but I have also noticed this as well..As I said the Plex interface works on the Mac and is able to be controled with the ATV remote and Trailers tries to load and says unavailable..but none of the ATV app work...they all time out...So more insight from someone trying hard to learn and fugure this out..so any advice is appericated.
thanks ever so much for the reply..yes I do have both plex and connect and have done just as you say but still no trailers or any other content via ATV when it is set to the IP of the Mac running everything
What this sounds like to me is like you are almost there.
First, have you made your machine that you have the Plex Media Server on set a static IP address? trust me, you don't want your router auto assigning it for you.
Next, you need to make sure that you know what you Plex Media Server machine's IP is.
On your Apple TV, you need to go into the settings, under the Network section, and manually change the DNS address to be the same thing as the Plex Media Server's IP.
You should be good from there, but if that isn't the case let us know.
OK...first off,,thanks for the reply..now I am using an Airport extreme router and the IP addy for my Imac running everything is the same as it has been. I guess I could make it static.
but it has not changed ever since I first got the router. I did change the DNS address on the ATV to the same IP and like I said something is not right..no duh right..lol...anyway
sorry to be a pain but I consider myself computer savy but again being new to Macs as well I am a bit out of my comfort zone as far as what to do and how to do it on the MAC
But again the strange thing is to me anyway that no content is available on the ATV with the IP set the same as the IMAC(Plex Server) so i will set the ip addy to static and see if that changes things..but any other ideas would be appericated
just start ./Plexconnect.py for once, click on trailers on the AppleTV and past everything its giving out here so we can give further assistance. I guess you started it already because you said you had it running.
ok I set the Mac a static Ip address and then it will not connect to the internet after that. SO what else do you think one might do?
Thanks
I would think that it's REALLY weird that the Mac would stop connecting to the internet once given a static IP. I am sorry I am admittedly out of my league here to some degree, I muddled my way into understanding what I am doing with this app, as i have never before it known static IPs and DNSs. I'd love to read through a log though if you can post one.
Well you of course have to set the correct IP, Gateway, DNS etc for your home network, just not an ip. Without the rest it cant work, but actually your DHCP server (which is your Router in your case, I guess) will give your mac the same ip every time, at least normally it should do that because it will recognize your MAC address and set it to the same ip as before
It might be easier for you to give you computer a DHCP reservation in your router rather than a static IP, as it sounds as if you do not know how to setup a static IP correctly.
Well you say you have started plexconnect by running ./Plexconnect.py correct?
If you do so, you get the output you are talking about.
- Start terminal
- cd /PlexConnect (assuming thats your folder, I have no idea where you placed it tbh)
type sudo ./PlexConnect.py
Then you should get the output, and this is the moment you start PlexConnect. But you said you had started it before, but that actually cant be the case as there are no official mac apps or what so ever.
Well believe it or not it is up and running. The .py file was the problem.
I fixed that by running it again after figuring out how to and fires right up
Thanks to all that helped me in this endeavor
