Plex keeps finishing 5mins before end of show

Hi
Prob a question asked a million times, but I have Plex on my firestick, and it keeps ending 5-10mins before a show ends. I can’t fast forward back to this ending, as it automatically turns off

Can anyone help me with this please? Thanks

Is what your watching being transcoded? I bet it is. Anyhow, if so try and increase the Transcoder default throttle buffer in your servers settings under transcoder. Try 120 and see if that helps.

Hi. Do I have to pay for the upgraded Plex service to alter that? I’m happy to pay for it if that’s the case so I can fix this

Oh, just noticed you don’t have a plex pass.

My guess is it’s the buffer size. I’ve seen this type of thing happen in the past and increasing it fixed it. However, I cannot say for sure it’ll fix the problem for you.

Appreciate the help

So what do you recommend I do? Tell me through it like im a newbie please. Its worth a try
I’ll pay for plex pass

Its a hard call. If transcoding is something you want (need) then purchasing a pass will give you this functionality. The full list of features for pass are called out here https://support.plex.tv/articles/201751006-plex-pass-feature-overview.

However, will this ultimately fix your problem! Maybe, but I cannot say with 100% certainty but I’d be somewhat confident.

BTW… IMO those fire-tv devices pure cheep crap (sorry). If your an android user, then I’d suggest a nvidia shield which is an amazing streaming device. I’ve never looked back after getting one myself.

It’s a fire cube I’m using, 3rd gen, so should be able to handle this easily

I used to like Shields but they are pretty outdated now. Fire cubes much safer for using iptv also

I’ll follow your advice and give it a go. I really appreciate your help

Sorry to be a pain. I’ve paid for Plex now. Can you talk me through changing the transcoding?

Sure. Under your servers settings go to Transcoder and you should see something like this …

… try changing the throttle buffer to 120 and see if it helps.

Transcoding is not a paid feature. Only hardware-accelerated transcoding requires Plex Pass.

Current Fire TV devices support more video codecs than Shields do. The only thing a Shield wins on now is being able to bitstream HD audio formats.

Does any of what you just said offer a solution to my problem?

Regardless of @nx6 comments (which added nothing to help or move along your situation) did the increase of the throttle buffer help at all ?

What is reported in the plex dashboard when the media is playing ? A copy of your server logs might also help right after this happens.

It offers a solution on “how not to spend $5/mo you shouldn’t need to.”

It’s kinda hard to offer assistance without info on what we are trying to play. The only video codec a third gen cube does not support is Hi10p. As an Android TV device it can play all subtitle formats. If transcoding has any cause here it might be 4:4:4 color space or PGS subs combined with HD audio.

I used to have an issue like this a long time ago, where I’d have problems using rewind at the end of a show if the show was transcoding, and then the server was marking it as played because we were in that last bit of the show (the part during the show’s ending credits). The player would hang on a spinning cursor and you’d have to exit out to regain control. I bet you dealt with this problem too @anon5074910, prior to client version 9.7.0 and ASS subtitle support.

Are you getting the next-episode screen when this happens? This might be a malfunction of that screen. So it’s jumping out of the video completely where it should be minimizing to show the upcoming episode page with the countdown timer. You can change the player settings (on the Fire Stick) under “Player Experience” – look for the option “Show Up Next” and change it to “When Video Finishes”. This will stop the player from trying to do that minimizing, so the video will continue to the end if that is the cause.

That wont fix the reason it’s exiting out, but it can help determine what is causing the issue (and if it works you can still see the end of shows while a solution is found).

In your server settings there are a couple options you might change to see if they have any effect:

Settings > Library:

  • Video Played Threshold – try raising this to 95%.
  • Video Play Completion Behavior – try “at final credits marker position” so the sever will stop marking shows as watched before you get all the way through them.

I’m going to try it tonight
I’ll let you know bro

No mate. The show literally just ends and if I try to start it again and fast forward to the end, the show won’t start

It does this with movies and tv shows. One movie ended 11ins early yesterdays

All the shows I’m watching are from a server I pay to access

MAJOR RED FLAG HERE!

Issue on my end. Works fine on other devices

If other devices are not having issues, will likely need the logs from the device having the problem that includes the playback ending early like that.
