I got a new Samsung Smart TV and installed the plex app. When I watch certain tv shows the app freezes on the credits (sometimes in between cards so it looks like a black screen). If I hit the back button it will unfreeze and go back to the Plex interface to continue to the next episode. My old “unsmart” Samsung TV (with external HDMI Roku device for Plex) doesn’t have issues with this. As best I can tell it doesn’t happen with .mp4 files, it seems to happen with .mkv files. I suspect this may be the issue. Anyone else had this problem?
Oh yes, there are several other topics on this issue.
I think this is related to certain subtitles that are included in the file.
When I delete those, the issue seems to dissapear on my samsung tv.
As a test, using MKVToolNix, I removed all subtitles from a show that was having this issue and now it plays just fine. Thanks for the tip! I’m sure I have some shows that require subs, so hopefully they will fix that in the future.
You’re very welcome!
I too use subtitles, but if you leave just the one you need, it should still work without ‘freezing.’
I guess plex has some sort of subtitle limit, but it remains strange to me that this issue only happens near the very end of an episode.
AFAIR, Samsung has a limit for the maximum supported number of streams within a file. IIRC it was 30 streams. If you add up all the audio, subtitle, and the video stream within the direct played file, you should arrive at maximum 30.
If you are above that, oust some of the subtitle streams that you (nor your sharees) definitely won’t use.
That is good to know! I will try that when I get to a show that needs specific subs.
I wondered if it was the TV in some way because my other TV works fine, but I use a Roku Streaming stick+ on that one (does not rely on the TV hardware).
