On Samsung TV app, all TV media buffers 2-3 minutes before end of episode, then finally errors out

Server Version#: 4.87.2
Player Version#: 5.48.1

It happens to all my TV media at the end of each episode, but sometimes also happens at other random positions throughout the episode, too.

Right around 2-3 minutes before the end of each episode, Plex will start to buffer. From here, one of two things happen:

  1. If I leave it buffering, it will eventually error out and tell me “there’s a problem playing media”
  2. I can use the TV remote to either rewind or fast forward, which then it will safely play through the rest of the episode

I use Plex on a Samsung TV, a Vizio TV, a TCL TV, a desktop PC’s Chrome browser, a laptop’s Windows App, a couple Android phones and an iPhone. This issue is only on the Samsung TV.

Is there a possible fix from you guys’ end, or do I need to chalk it up to Samsung’s shortcoming and live with it?

Same problem here. Still waiting for a fix. It used to work just fine so I suppose it has to be some software issue.

Same issue here. Happens since the previous update. Tried completely uninstalling media server and tv app and it still happens.

In my case, this issue is related to subtitles:

When the video is almost at an end and the last subtitles are about to show, the issue takes place. The very last line of subtitles will NOT be shown and then plex will also begin to buffer.
When I turn the subtitles off, the issue will not take place.

When I turn them on again, the same problem takes place time after time. Always at the end of a video when the last conversation takes place and right after the very last subtitles should appear.
Therefor this issue has to be connected somehow to the end of the subtitles.

This issue never happened before in the past so it must be a bug from a previous update.

I did some more testing;

When using subtitles, the issue always happens when using ‘direct stream’.
If you disable direct stream in the Samsung plex app, the error will not appear.
Therefor this will give you the opportunity to watch your videos with subtitles.

On the downside, this process will ask a lot from your CPU.
Hopefully an update to fix this issue is comming soon.

Interesting find. I’m not 100% positive so I’ll have to pay a bit more attention when I’m watching something without subtitles. I can definitely second the fact that it happens on ones with subtitles. In fact, I’ve been finding it “pausing” multiple times while watching a 22 minute episode, forcing me to rewind 10 seconds multiple times…

So, I did some testing of my own.

Disabling the “Direct Stream” does not seem to do the trick for me, unfortunately. There were however, a couple different variations in what I was testing.

For a different reason that I don’t remember, I have my subtitle burning “Always.” It must have something to do with certain videos not playing in the past. Like I stated above, same “stop/loading” occurs even when I have the “Direct Stream” off. However, changing the subtitle setting from “Always” to “Automatic” seems to stop the “stop/loading” from happening, except it stops to display the subtitles at all.

I also came across somewhat of a random encounter that may or may not be related. While I was poking around different settings, I turned on the trailers feature to play one trailer before the movie starts. And what do you know? It stopped with the spinner right in the middle of a trailer, then errored out. lol

I think I have it resolved. Not sure if it’ll apply to everyone, but at least for me it turned out to be the subtitle burning that was the culprit. As soon as I changed it to “Never” burning, all of the pausing stopped, even with Direct Stream turned on.

I’ve been getting this exact thing for a few weeks and it’s driving me nuts because I watch 80% of my content with subtitles. Going to fiddle around with automatic subs but let us know if anybody finds a fix
