Samsung TV stream will crash if using subtitles

Server Version#: 1.31.2.6810
Player Version#: 5.56.1

When using SRT subtitles video will crash after about 30 seconds. Any fix?

There is no point in being a plex pass subscriber if the software is not working.

There is this thread where somebody claims that Samsung limits the number of tracks in a stream (video + audio + subtitles) to a total of 30, and stream freezes with more tracks, so the way is to remove unnecessary tracks. Unfortunately, my videos are freezing even with 4 tracks (1 video + 2 audio + 1 subs) :man_shrugging:, so the only working solution is to set Burn subtitles on Always, which will force the Plex server to transcode all video stream .

Found some similar posts. At this point Im sure that the Samsung app is useless and should be taken down if not for the issues that are present then definitely for the lack of support and updates.

Could you provide more info than “it will crash”? Does it happen for every movie? Were you transcoding? What kind of video? Can you provide logs? What model & year TV?

It happens for every movie, series or what not that uses subtitles. Video is never transcoded and audio is sometimes transcoded, end result is the same. TV is 2022 year samsung QN90A.
I wont provide any logs as I have given up using it.

Same problem, here some logs :

Try with 3 different Samsung TV
With every mkv file with srt subtitle
Direct playing
Local Lan playing
Server : Synology (without docker)

Thanks in advance @sLumpy

I’ve been tearing my hair out for the past couple of months because of playback problems with media from my home xPenology server (Intel E3-1245v6 cpu 4 core, 8 threads @ 3,700Gbps, with included GPU and running Synology’s DSM 7.1.1-42962 Update 3). My TV is a 2017 Samsung
QA55Q7FAMW OLED with a smart hub. First time I experienced major problems was a couple of years ago with the July, 2020 movie “Greyhound”.

Originally, my NAS was running a E3-1240v6 cpu. I upgraded its cpu to the E3-1245v6, hoping that the included GPU would solve the problems - unfortunately not!

Funny thing though, is that my son has several Samsung smart TVs, and he’s not seeing the problems that I’m experiencing. His NAS is lower powered than mine and his smart TVs are lower end models without the “smart hubs.”

We’ve done some experimenting to help narrow down the issues. These have proved conclusively that all of the problems can be squarely identified with shortcomings in my TV and are not due to server problems. My server can play the media across the network to his TVs without any issues. The same media played to my Samsung TV experienced the stuttering and pixellation that makes them unwatchable until I reduce the number of subtitle streams to less than 20 (using MKVToolNix).

All TVs are connected via fast Ethernet connection; we have a fast 60 Gbps/6.4 km bridging link between our residences.

Today, we played around with my TV’s settings; changing the “burn subtitle” settings from “Never” to “Always.” This put extra transcoding work on my server, which is now averaging 8% CPU with only the one Plex media session playing. Previously, when transcoding setting on the TV were set to “Never”, my server CPU would remain at about 2% under normal operation with the Plex Media Server playing.

The point is; by setting the TVs requirement that the server Burn subtitles “Always”, this saw an immediate resolution of the problem. My TV ceased stuttering/pixelating in playing those media that it previously could not play. Problem solved!
