I have had Plex installed and working on an Ubuntu PC for at least 4 years without any problems. The other day I let it install a Plex update and now it keeps losing remote access. If I click disable remote access and then click to enable it again. It will work for a little while. Any ideas as to where to look to fix this?
Plex takes an „optimistic approach“ while testing the server’s remote access status… while it’s still testing, Plex will display the remote access status as „green“. Therefore you should consider it’s not working at all at the moment.
Did you already have a look at the related troubleshooting support article?
There’s also a guide with some more details on how to troubleshoot remote access issues… incl. how to pin down what might be causing the issue for you.
It may be using Plex Relay, a fallback for when Remote Access is not working. The stream is tunneled through servers at plex.tv and is limited to 2 Mbps (1 Mbps w/o a Plex Pass).
Monitor the stream via Plex Dashboard → Now Playing + Expanded View. If the connection is listed as Indirect, it is using Plex Relay.
On Linux, if using dpkg, you can install the older version.
With other platforms or installation methods, you may need to uninstall the current version, then install the desired version.
After installation you may see a “503 maintenance” message in Plex Web. This indicates Plex is updating the database. Wait a few minutes and try again.
Hello, I completed the complete uninstallation of PMS, I have installed the latest version, and I still cannot watch movies remotely, I am paying a subscription, if the same problem continues, I will have to decline the service and go to another software.
It’s generally highly unlikely to be related to a server upgrade – you’ve just confirmed it’s not the case here. Keep in mind there’s lots of different players involved when it comes to remote access… ranging from a bad configuration inside Plex, a bad network configuration of your server’s host machine, something off in your home network, a bad configuration of your router, some changes from your ISP…
Did you take a look at the troubleshooting guide to at least pin down what’s going wrong?
I attach the PMS log, also the open ports of my ISP provider, as indicated, before all this, it could be seen remotely connected indirectly, without problems.
Do you still have the previous version package available ?
If so, as a crazy test,
Uninstall PMS (do not delete what you have)
sudo dpkg -i filename.deb
Start PMS
If you don’t have it, tell me what you need.
I will tell you, using Mint is not stable for PMS. It has a long history of working and then suddenly failing. We don’t officially support it for that reason.
It works great as a desktop but doesn’t seem to hold up to the load of running servers on it.
I’m trying to track down a possible problem elsewhere which might be related
If this doesn’t resolve it, we can go back further and I’ll give you the tweak for the preferences.xml file so the transcoder behaves as it should.
