From Bad to Worse. Now Remote Access Not Working

Server Version#: Version 1.41.5.9522

First we got the bad news about PLEX charging us to serve our own media, stored on our hard drives, using our bandwidth and CPU, to family members – unless we pay for the privilege of doing so.

Now, as of today – and this hasn’t happened to me in at least five years or more – Remote Access is down. My settings have been solid and unchanged for as long as I’ve made my libraries available. Now, Remote Access connects but goes down after a minute or so. None of my managed users can access my content.

It appears to me that PLEX has decided to phase out the kind of Remote Streaming I do (which is the only reason I use PLEX) and instead try to compete with other streaming apps like Fubu or FOOBAR and provide paid content. It seems that’s the future course they’ve set.

Otherwise, why on earth would my Remote Access go down after all these years. Unless it had to do with a recent software update. But that’s unlikely, since I applied the update a number of days ago and didn’t seem to notice, or be notified about, any problems with Remote Access.

Is it possible for me to download and revert back to a previous version of PLEX Media Server? If so, where are the links.

There’s been no change to kill remote access from PMS. It’s more likely there’s been some change to your remote access „situation“. There’s a lot of aspects outside your control, e.g. ISPs can apply filters or change their backbone.

I recommend you review your router config.
If you haven’t done yet, go for a manual port forward instead of using UPnP, and test if the router & forwarded public port are accessible from outside your home network (e.g. using a service like canyouseeme.org).

I also have not changed any settings beyond updating to the newest version of the server and mobile apps, and it has bricked my remote access as well, only staying on for a few minutes each time I reset remote access.

I am now having to troubleshoot with my ISP since there has been no reasoning from PLEX as to why this has happened now, after years of a stable connection. If anyone finds a solution to this issue, it is becoming a real headache.

I’m going to echo the same issues - Plex has been fine, but all of a sudden, I updated the apps, and one of my two Android apps won’t stream from inside the network (even if they’re both in the same room) and gives me a codec error, neither app will find my libraries either internally or on remote. I saw that remote was down on the server, updated the server, re-enabled remote, and it’s now down again. I may have a “double-NAT” issue, but again, hasn’t been a problem until this last app change.

Library is accessible on the browser, but the whole point is not to tie up the computer by streaming media to it. I’m honestly more certain that it’s an app problem rather than a config problem, because in six years, I haven’t had the issue ever, and I’ve changed both the router and the cable modem in that time, neither of which triggered a remote access issue.
