Plex keeps reverting back to a previous database

Hello everyone,

I am encountering a really weird issue with my Plex server that makes it borderline unusable from a user experience. Recently we had a power outage in our home for about 3 seconds, but ever since then, my Plex server is reverting back to a time around January 2026. Any media that has been added after that doesn’t get read in and is essentially frozen in time. This only seems to be affecting my Movies section and doesn’t affect my TV shows. Only way to temporarily fix the issue is to delete the Movie library and add it back again. This only works, but as soon as new media is in my Synology NAS, it instantly reverts back to January 2026 database.

I have tried emptying the trash, cleaning bundles, optimizing database and none of them worked. I have also had to delete my old database and start a brand new one. I have gotten rid of the previous database files and did a fresh install of Plex Media Server that’s essentially brand new and it fixed the problem temporarily. I recently got new movies in my library and again, the issue came back just a day later.

I’m not sure what to do and this is seriously frustrating to deal with since I have other family members outside my house that use my library to watch movies and shows.

There is a SMB bug in the MacOS. It causes files to randomly appear as unavailable in Plex libraries. See this post for workarounds: Plex Files Unavailable but they’re not missing - #638 by Bat_Mang

Also check for database corruption. This is unlikely, since you deleted the existing files and started over, but it does not hurt to check.

Pull the server log files. Look in Plex Media Server.log, and rollovers .1.log to .5.log, for ERROR entries that say the database is malformed or corrupt (search for those terms).

If the database is damaged, use the DBRepair for Plex Media Server tool. Alternately, you can follow the Plex support article to repair a corrupt database.
