Plex Live TV Crashing on Direct Play after pausing

Server Version#: 1.18.2.2041
Player Version#: 7.25.0.13933

When watching a live tv stream on my Shield with direct play, if I pause for around 5 minutes or more, the playback will crash after resuming. I am using a hdhome run quatro mpeg 2 stream direct play. I can force it to transcode by selecting a lower quality and it doesn’t have this issue.
Been happening for a while.

Same problem here…

Support needs more information to work off of than “Same problem here…”

There have been frequent Android releases and even more beta versions which it looks like you are using, so bugs are to be expected.

When I have a few minutes, I’ll submit logs. This has been happening for about a year for me in public and beta releases…

Here are the logs from my Mi Box running android TV… same problem. After pausing for about 5 minutes, resume and watch for a minute. Maybe fast forward a couple times and then it locks up with a message Weak Signal.

Yes, this problem is going on for ~1Y and I even remember one thread where someone from the Plex team acknowledge the problem and said Support was investigating… :-/

HI All

Thanks for the reporting this, it sounds like it could be a server issue but will I will need to look into it.

Do you have the original thread @rsemedo? can hopefully chase it up better

Thanks again

Please, please fix this…very bad WAF and maintaining two MC just to watch TV…

I think the old thread is closed, I stopped receiving updates on it… can’t find it…

No problem @rsemedo, thanks for looking.

Out of interest does anyone see the same behaviour on any other platform (Roku, Web etc)?

And would someone be able to supply their Android device logs too, sorry @upsidedowntruth I can only see server logs in the ones you sent previously.

Thanks again everyone

I have noticed some random messages about weak signals and just stops playing the channel and returns to guide. I can do more testing on Roku… if I force the Roku to transcode I see less errors. I’ll look into getting player logs from Android TV

Any new findings here…? Do you need my Shield logs?

Btw, love the new TV UI changes @daioio , the channel’s row in the Home screen is super useful…things are getting there regarding TV on Plex… …but please fix this problem, it’s the only thing preventing me to finally shut down my old Media center…

Still the same issues with my shield, so I assume nothing found yet?

Still nothing?? @upsidedowntruth are we the only ones??? Maybe should we try to troubleshoot ourselves…?
I have a pretty normal ShieldTV with a Windows10 machine, all in SSD’s… I have a “dedicated” drive for transcoding…already tried different drives in my PC but the behaviour is the same…not sure if there are any options to “play with” or whatever… :frowning:

@rsemedo I’ve tried different server types with the same results. Tried Ubuntu, WD Pr 2100, windows 10, and Shield as servers… same issue on all of them. The only way it won’t crash is transcoding. Direct play always crashes.

I think my mixed environment proves this is a server software issue. I’ve had this same problem on 4 different servers with different OS’s (Win10 / Ubuntu Linux both on I7’s with 16 gigs of ram, Plex server running on Nvidia Shield, and Plex server running on 2011 Macbook Pro) and almost every client that exists (Android client on Samsung Galaxy s10, s9, s8, Tab 8, Roku, Fire TV, an old Google TV Blue ray Player, Nvidia Shield, Windows 10 on desktop and Surface pro, 4k Samsung TV, and a 2015 Macbook) plus the web client on the machines where that was a feasible option. I have had the exact same issue using every combination of all of the above. Pause for any longer than a few seconds, and a little while later I will get an error about the stream that requires me to tune another channel for a moment before I can go back to the channel I was watching, losing whatever buffer between where I was and live TV. I was on an older model connect duo, upgraded to the newest model connect quatro hoping that might make a difference, and it has not. The official HDHomeRun app on Win10 allows me to pause for up to 10 minutes (maybe longer, I haven’t tried yet) and never has this issue, I can watch for as long as I want after that with or without catching up to live by fast-forwarding through commercials.

I really want this to be fixed, but in the mean time if transcoding is a reliable work-around, is there a way to force transcoding without stepping the resolution down from 1080p to 720? Can I just force all streams to transcode at 1080p even if the source is already 1080p? I haven’t tried transcoding at all, just stock settings from installation

Live TV already traverses the transcoder pipeline which may or may not be the source of the problem. I am not able to recreate this on the server version 1.18.3.2129 running on Debian 10 to a Windows 10 PMP or Roku. I would start a new thread with Server tags, from the start include Debug(not Verbose) logs with the normal recreate the problem, wait 5 minutes and grab the logs then upload.
