I’m wondering if anyone has a good setup that works in Canada for the LiveTV and DVR features of Plex? I’ve read that the WinTV-dualHD TV Tuner has no options of EPG (Electronic Program Guide) for Canada - although, not sure if that’s needed with the Plex (if Plex uses it’s own EPG or if it “pulls” it from the tuner).
The SiliconDust HDHomeRun EXTEND or CONNECT looks good (not sure of what the difference is between the two) and which antenna would be a good choice to pair up with this tuner? The AVERMEDIA H837 AVerTV Volar Hybrid Q HDTV looks good too but apparently it’s limited to one feed.
We only plan on watching LiveTV on one TV, however, sometimes showtimes overlap - so my question is, can we watch one TV show live and have another show PVR’d at the same time on the same Plex Media Server? Or have two TV show’s PVR’d simultaneously? That would be a determining factor between the AverTV Tuner and the HDHomeRun …
I’m in Canada and I have plex dvr running. I use the Hdhomerun connect. The difference between the connect and the extend is the transcoding capability of the extend. Instead of getting the raw mpeg2, you get a h. 264 stream that takes a little less space.
I live near the us border, so I get also all the US major networks. Gracenote works great for both ota markets, though I had to try different postal codes before finding 1 that populate all the channels.
For the antenna, that really depends where you live. Check tvfool.com to see what you can get at your address. Also, you can go on digitalhome.ca and find the ota broadcast thread for your area. It’s the best place to get advice about antenna and reception.
Also, the connect and the extend have 2 tuners. So that mean you can record 2 shows at a time or you can record 1 and use the other for live tv. If you need more, you can add a second connect so you will have 4 tuners.
Hi @rouq - would I need multiple antennas to record multiple shows or the same antenna will work for both feeds? I’m thinking of the EXTEND as I like the idea of having it in h.264.
So, from tvfool.com it looks like I can get quite a few channels but I see that they require the antenna to be at two different “azimuths” 276 and 189 … if I wanted to get all those channels would i have to use 2 antennas and would that work with one tuner or would I need a tuner/antenna setup for each of the two azimuths?
Actually, since there is almost 90 degrees between both sites, I would suggest using an Antennadirect db8e and aimed 1 panel at 276 degrees and the other panel at 189 degrees. That ways, hopping there is not to much multipath interference, you should be able to get all the channels with this antenna.
@coconuto
Your postal code should be enough to get all the channels you receive from gracenote. If it’s not the case, first you can fill up the gracenote error form posted by bigwheel today to try to get it fixed.
In the mean time, try different postal codes near you, postal code near the US border, between Toronto and Buffalo. I live also in Canada and get all the channels from Montreal, Burlington (Vermont) and Platsburg. My postal code did not populate the US channels. I tried few postal codes near the us Border and I did find one that populates all my channels.
Ah! Thanks rouq! It took me while to figure out I needed a postal code near the border. I used J0J1J0 in Lacolle, seems to work fine. Which one do you use?
