Plex looking for servers

I am so FRUSTRATED. I signed up for an account in Canada. I’m on my Windows 7 computer, page open and server downloaded but just says LOOKING FOR SERVERS. Tried uninstalling antivirus, malware, etc. Still Looking for servers.

Try logging into the server locally. First time set ups can be frustrating. see: https://support.plex.tv/articles/200878643-sign-in-to-your-plex-account/ and look at the Signing your Server in to Plex section

I looked at that link and its confusing to me and I dint understand what you mean by locally or signing your server into plex section? Not computer literate. Lol

Log on local (not on the internet:
http://localhost:32400/web or http://127.0.0.1:32400/web
placeone on your browsers address line.

The top right corner of the window you should see your account icon select it and logon with your PLEX logon.

It should show your initial server window where you can create libraries to view your media. After setting up you can use the online logon of:
https://app.plex.tv/desktop# and your server should come up with your server from then on

I tried those. Same thing. Top left says looking for servers with circle spinning. Ive downloaded servers where it says download plex media server and installed. Still nothing? Very frustrating. It would be nice to have someone to talk me through it. Phone tech support since I paid already.

The forums are the only tech support. No phones at the company apparently. So you have not gotten anything set up? Is that right? Loaded the software, is the server running in your tray?

There is no Plex phone support and very little support if you do not provide details of your system and exactly what is happening and hardware involved.

When you “paid” for a Plex Pass you paid for access to some additional features and to help support Plex. You did not “pay” for support. Plex’s only support is right here on the forums.

Yes in my tray.

Right-hand click the plex server icon and exit. Then restart it from your start menu. Try to locally log on again. You may see your server , or you may need to select it from the drop down on the upper left.

If this doesn’t work, hopefully one of the Plex Ninjas (Company folks and/or way smart folks) will chime in.

Wont open from start menu. Its there but when I push open it doesnt?

After selecting it in the start menu icon usually the only way to know if it started is to look into the tray and see if it is there.

Try opening the browser

Its in the tray. & I can right click on it and open it. It asks me to sign in. And once the page is open there is no media server because it is looking for media server up in the top left corner as I had said. I thank you for all your help so far. I don’t understand why it can’t connect with the media server that I downloaded and installed off of the initial page

I assume you logged in…

You might dry de-installing the server, and download a fresh copy. The last download may have had problems.

Running out of ideas :frowning:

I tried that several times as well. Lol. Just does the same. Shouldnt be that difficult youd think. Lol

Im reinstalling.

Now it all your new server. Excellent. Check your download location for Plex Media Server install it. Once it is running, check back here and we’ll get you set up. But I already installed it? It came up as a program and I pushed on run and it said it had launched it. Not sure what that all means

Hi, to hopefully explain further, plex consists of TWO parts.

  • plex media server - this runs on a pc or linux box or whatever, and you configure it to index your media, which it will then server to the various plex clients

  • plex clients - clients run on a wide variety of devices, such a pc/web browser, mobile devices, roku, xbox, ps4, smart tvs, nvidia shield and other streamer devices, and so on.

to configure your plex server you must connect to the ADMIN interface over a web browser.

https://app.plex.tv/desktop should be the default link that loads your server interface, however you may also access it directly with your server IP @ https://ipofyourserver:32400/manage

once the server is configured and indexing your media, then you can use the same web browser interface to browse the library and play content, or you can install a plex client on your device(s) and login with the same account as the server, then you should be to browse and play your media via the client interface.

plex does not provide any content, it is not netflix and does not download any media for you.

there are some free stuff like PODCASTS, NEWS and WEB SHOWS that you can stream without a plex server for free, but that is it.

Yes. It’s the media server that I download and install that doesn’t seem to be able to be found by the webpage. It continues to say looking for servers. So I cannot even look up to add anything to it because the only thing that it would add is what is actually given to you in the first place. It needs a server does it not? And for some reason it is looking for servers but nothing is found even though if I go to settings authorize devices it shows Firefox 17 minutes ago Firefox 3 hours ago Firefox 2 hours ago. Meaning that those are the times that I downloaded the Plex Media Server

you might try another browser just to rule out firefox?

Trying it on Internet Explorer. Will let you know what I find out. Thanks
