Can I install the latest beta version on my WD MyPassport Wireless Pro if I buy the Plex Pass? I used to use MyPassport Wireless Pro as a Plex Server with Chromecast until there was an issue with the subtitle disappearing. Would be nice to do that again instead of using my PC as a server.
I’m sorry to say it, but Plex has to convince the public to switch to a premium subscription (plex pass) with positive things, with benefits, not with negative things: buy a plex pass to get a fix for a basic feature like subtitles.

Good point!
Still happening on latest public version.

The public release does not yet have the fixes. There have been reliability issues with the beta versions resulting in crashes and lockouts - once the beta is deemed stable, it will get released as a public release
It’s sad that such a great software fails at something as basic as displaying subtitles…
Hope it will be fixed soon, got to watch french series/movies to avoid subtitles
After a few days of testing I confirm what’s been said:
-subtitles drop is (90%) fixed in the latest beta with hardware accelerated or software transcoding , when you fool around too much with fast forward or backward it can disappear though
-plex is less stable during playback, I experienced a few frame drops/freezes in a 2hr 10Gb movie last night, but for the first time in months didn’t have to restart the movie after subtitles loss
Maybe someone from Plex can answer a technical question though: how come Plex transcodes systematically for Chromecast viewing when subtitles are activated when some others don’t (emby) ?
thanks
Subtitles alone shouldn’t be enough to trigger transcoding on the Chromecast. Could you please send me a sample of the video and subs, and I can take a look? Thanks!

Would need sample files that give this dropout and logs covering time when it happens.
Is it an SRT ?
A specific set of files ?

Any chance we can get an update from the Plex guys about what the status of this issue is?
My experience is subitles are randomly disappearing on the web player and I need to turn off and back on the subtitles to get them back - until they disappear again.
If there are errors happening, that needs to be brought up to the UI instead of just silently failing and giving the user no indication as to why. If you need logs and media samples to help debug the issue (I can’t think of why if your logging is decent but ok…), then please provide integrated tooling so users are able to do it at the press of a button.
If the subtitles are disappearing because of an exception being thrown somewhere, then what should happen is the video player should show a notification that an error just occurred with in the subtitle module, and give me a button to report the problem.
I expected a more polished experience at the price point I’m payinpg for plex subscription.

Let me translate what someone in the know has said above and in other posts.
The ‘plex guys’ thought they fixed it. For many, they have. "They are probably not even looking at it right now because no one else has provided data they can reproduce.
“They” need more info, as stated by a Ninja in the post above yours.
Provide that data.
Perhaps then they’ll be able to reproduce the issue.
Contribute following below.

I know I come across as blunt. But until people provide data needed when ninjas and, occasionally, even Plex employees, ask for more data… it’s all just noise.
That brings us back to, the current mechanism for reporting bugs and providing such data is laughable. With a paid service, I expect the onus to be on the service provider to actively fix issues, not to sit back and say they’re blocked until some number of people follow a convoluted set of instructions buried in a post deep in the discussion forms.
If they’re blocked on samples, then make sample collection accessible to most users rather than offloading the task to a tiny percentage of tech savvy ones who even understand those instructions.
@bicubic12 - Though I can’t say I disagree, such is the way here, and you are more than welcome to show your displeasure with your wallet.
That being said, unfortunately, and I truly don’t mean this rudely, here in the forums, the rule of “put up (details) or shut up”, or, “pictures or it didn’t happen” applies.
If you don’t wish to submit details, and no one else does, Plex devs are much less likely to be able to reproduce in the labs to repair.
Same problem here. No fix still…

Plex is a small indie company, obviously they cannot afford to have a good QA team to ensure basic features works. But of course there are more important things to focus on, like VR.
Unlike other competitors out there, you know like Emby, who never had to deal with whiners like us because you know, things just works.
It’s totally users fault here, I agree and let’s stop whining and vote with wallets.
Came here to check for other users experiencing the same as me after the last update, and it seems I’m not alone in the boat.
May I suggest the dev team focus on basic functions before even considering adding more functions like VR and such…
Master the basics before you move on.
It is annoyingly unnecessary that we have to revisit this bug every so often…
When thinking about it, though… Has there been any updates to the webplayer on plex.tv since yesterday?
It was working fine 24 hours ago, but today the subtitles seem to disappear after a few minutes…

Difficult to tell. Devs won’t post what’s changed unless they feel it’s “user-facing”.
