Plex losing subtitle while playing

Hint: if enough pass user asks for refunds, they might get their thing together and after a few month, they might actually fix the issue, which they could have just roll back a few months ago.
I wonder how long this post will survive here. :disappointed:

Hi there

well I have a plex pass so I am a paying customer
I am afraid to report that (.srt) subtitles are still droping after 5 to 10mn when hardware transcoding is being used…
I could turn off HW transcoding, then the issue tends not to happen but it uses 50 to 80% CPU on my NAS depending on the stream quality…

If there’s a workaround I’d be happy to hear about it, if not I might as well return to free version until it s fixed
My config is
Server: Synology Diskstation DS218+
Player: chromecast or sony opera player TV

thanks

Please could you try and see if you can get this to happen with a 20-30 minute clip and provide server logs and keep the media file and srt available in case they are needed.

Please ensure debug logging is enabled on the server. And restart 5he server to get fresh logs. Reproduce the error with chromecast and note down the time of the subs dropping (actual time and relative to beginning of clip) and download the logs and attach th3 zipped logs together with the time info

When is PMS 1.11.0.4666 coming to public channel? I am a Chromecast user with the latest public (1.10.1.4602) and it is pretty broken for me. English not being my first language, this is is awkwardly annoying for me.

It did not make it to public because there were a number of crashes
It has now been superseded with 1.11.1.4730 which was released as beta yesterday

Cool! It’s a relief to get an insight about how things are going. By the way, how much time does it usually take for a version to be approved from beta to the public channel?

Don’t think there is an answer but you can read the release notes and look at past history. It is variable and past history does not necessarilly reflect what will happen

done
on a sidenote it does not happen on the Plex app of an old opera-based sony tv i own
here is a copy of the text file, keep us posted.
thanks

chromecast tv player with srt subtitles on PlexMediaServer-1.11.1.4730-6967ec0b1-x86_64 installed on Synology DS218+ NAS
-subtitles stopped at 20h52 local time and at 9minutes 30 seconds in the movie (billions S02e12)
-strangely subtitles restarted after 5 minutes in pause (the time for me to get the logs and type this message…)
-dropped again at 21:07 local time, 14minutes 32 seconds in the movie
-then back again after 1 minute in pause
-and dropped again at 21:14 local time 18minutes 02 in the movie

then I got bored and put a USB stick in my TV

Same here with the issue… Even on Android app, while watching a movie, pushing in the Setting icon, the “subtitle” option shows “None”, switching to the subtitle language, get the subtitles again, but not permanently…

I’m back at version 1.9.6.4429, I think is the last version without this problem, If I remember well… :s

+1, very annoying !

any update on this issue following log submission ?

Sorry for the delay to come back to you. When asking for the logs I assumed you were running the Plex Pass beta release and not on 1.10.1.4602.

The hardware transcoding may be changing the timing. The subtitles are being downloaded by chromecast through this interface

Jan 27, 2018 20:31:47.747 [0x7fe49e37d700] DEBUG - Request: [192.168.1.184:37639 (Subnet)] GET /video/:/transcode/universal/subtitles?hasMDE=1&path=%2Flibrary%2Fmetadata%2F1529&mediaIndex=0&partIndex=0&protocol=http&fastSeek=1&directPlay=0&directStream=1&subtitleSize=100&audioBoost=0&location=lan&maxVideoBitrate=4000&session=bl5geljhbb6g9a6kk40wn225&offset=0&subtitles=auto&copyts=1&Accept-Language=en (41 live) TLS GZIP Signed-in Token (Britzkrieg)

and the way this is handled has been changed to overcome the issues reported in this forum topic for subtitles on chromecast getting dropped.

So I am sorry but I have to ask you to try this out with the current beta release of Plex Media Server. The fix for the subtitles on chromecast came in with beta release
1.11.0.4633 - release notice http://forums.plex.tv/discussion/comment/1577387/#Comment_1577387

  • (Transcoder) Sidecar subtitles could disappear when using direct stream (#7931)

If the problem occurs on the current beta 1.11.1.4760 then please submit fresh logs again with indication of when the subs get dropped

Great… last two official versions seems to work a litte better, less “subtitle loss”, just one occurrence…

Now running in 1.11.1.4760…

happy to report that I have played a full 1hr episode (transcoding on chromecast) on the 1.11.1.4768-338 beta without losing subtitles, first time in months
Will keep on testing in a couple of days

Great…!!! going for it…!!!

Tried for many hours now and it “works” , no hard crashes.

However its not 100% , subtitles “flashes” and getting slight out of sync so they only show ½ second before showing next subtitle. Its a minor annoyance but acceptable.

Running on Win server - 1.11.1.4753

This is awful. This problem has been discussed since September, and still not working on the official version for me.

I tried the free version of Plex in the last months, why would I EVER pay anything for Plex if serious problems like this are handled in such a fashion? I am deeply disappointed and will have to look for alternatives it seems.

At this point I am happy to recommend Emby to anyone who struggles with subtitle in Plex.

I have used Plex for, maybe 5 years, and made the switch to Emby last month, and I must say it has exceeded my expectations by tons. Most if not all of my files are able to direct play with various forms of players, including Chromecast, with 100% proper subtitle! In the past Plex need to transcodes every freaking media whenever subtitle is involved.

Yeah, I also installed Emby yesterday and started testing it, looking better so far. For me it even works to download new subtitles from opensubtitles directly in the android app, something i never got to work with Plex.

But even if that would be possible, it wouldnt help if the subtitles just randomly stop showing after a few minutes, good job Plex…

if plex continues to fail to support subtitles I’ll have to cancel my plex pass

The fix for the chromecast subtitles loss issue was released in beta release to Plex Pass users some time ago.
A Samsung Tizen subtitles issues has just been fixed with the new updated app and latest beta of Plex Media Server

The issue is that there has been delays in getting the Beta release with the chromecast fix out as public release and I gave a reason recently here http://forums.plex.tv/discussion/comment/1611900/#Comment_1611900

I have the same issue. I have stopped my premium account because this is driving nuts ! For now I’m using videostream to cast movies on my TV please Plex do something about it.

Nothing will be done without evidence to investigate the problem

A number of loss of subtitles issues have already been addressed and fixed in recent beta releases of Plex Media Server

Beta releases are available to Plex Pass users. There are some reported lockouts and crashes that have stopped these beta releases from becoming a public release.

We already have confirmation from users that subtitles loss was fixed by these betas.

There were some other issues that were fixed for Plex for Android in lastest 6.13 release and for Plex for Samsung Tizen by latest release and latest Plex Media Server beta

You have 3 servers on your account and one server is using the latest public release and two are using older versions

If you have a problem with the loss of subtitles when using the latest beta release of Plex Media Server and latest plex app release, then please provide evidence in terms of server logs and plex app logs and indication of when the subtitles dropped. A sample file that has the issue may be required to reproduce the problem and investigate it
