Network Logging for the nVidia Shield App - corresponding to the server logs
Time when language was switched
So please repeat again and get me the media info xml, time of language switch and loss of subs and two sets of logs - the server logs and network logging from shield copied from web browser to a text file
Is it possible for you to clip the mkv to say a 5 minute clip - using mkvtools and also provide that so that we can try to reproduce the problem. For the clip please zip and upload to dropbox pr similar service and share a link to it

Same here on 1.15.0.659, playing video on chromecast from an android phone, and the subtitles are lost after a few minutes.
On the android app, the subtitles are shown are activated. If you select the subtitle again, it reloads the video with the subtitles.
But this is a very very painful process…
It is annoying to see bugs reappearing like that so often.
Same issue. Using 1.15.0.659 and web player version 3.87.2.
Workaround is to always burn subtitles which forces conversion, no direct play. I’d rather deal with that to keep the subs on than re-choosing the subs every to minutes. It would be great to get this fixed. I don’t suppose there have been any word on the next update regarding this?
This problem started with me as well - after upgrading my Plex Server.
I don’t remember what version I used before, but never had this issue before.
I really don’t know what to do.
EDIT
Chromecast and apps streaming work well.
The problem is happening with Plex Media Player on Chrome.
It also happens with my friend who is sharing my library.
Hi there, I’m a new PLEX user, but I’m an experienced Linux Admin.
I had my first issue with subtitles: They come and go anytime.
I compared a working .srt file with another non-working srt file ( Different movie files each ).
The one working had ISO8859-1 encoded text with dos formatting ( NEWLINE, CRLF ).
So I tried to convert the non-working subtitle to the same specs: SAME RESULT, subtitles come an go.
Then, I converted the non-working .srt file to UTF-8 formatting and just moved it to the same folder as the video file. It worked.
Then I packed it all together ( mkvtoolnix ) and it still works.
From my current experience and the replies in this thread, I bet there’s some Nasty BUG in plex, hard to find.
Why two files with the same formatting resulted in one working OK and the other did not ?
Try it out people, let’s try to put some light into this problem.
If this is still happening with the current version of Plex Media Server (1.15.2.793-782228f99) please could you provide logs from the server and the client app plus a sample
Another approach:
It must be something about the MKV format.
I didn’t have much time to “test” this issue, but, so far, I told in my previous post, that an external srt file worked fine.
Now, I have tried both UTF-8 and ISO8859-1 encoding into an mkv file and both had the issue.
Until I prove myself wrong, I think it really is something about the MKV files.
I’ve managed to get Fedora’s 24 Totem to play with non-working subtitle inside MKV ( but the second one worked ).
Then I tried into VLC: The UTF-8 one didn’t work, the ISO8859-1 worked with wrong special characters.
I double-checked mkvtoolnix, and saw that there’s an extra option at the right column “properties” for the tracks: “Subtitle and chapter properties” and checked the right encoding for the included srt files.
I’ve set the correct encoding ( UTF-8 ) and the “Compresion” option at the beginning of this section to “no extra compression”. ( Not sure if this fixes anything… but it might not hurt )
After checking the behavior in other programs: Totem and VLC, I bet there’s a common library for mkv, and considering that I’ve just created another mkv without any subtitle issues ( apparently )… It has to be related to the encoding options of the track.
Update before posting: 4 MKV files re-generated without the subtitle issue.
Just set the correct encoding property.
I hope it helps you guys as well as the Plex team!
I have had this problem for many many months. It will occur whether I have the subs locally in a file, named the same as the movie with eng in the file name or whether I use the download sub feature. This is using Direct Play, and not transcoded.
Client:
XBox One X (not sure I can get you logs from it)
Server: Can provide Logs if requested.
Windows 2012 R2 Server
4 CPU
8 GB RAM
I am a Plex Pass subscriber, and am running PlexMediaServer-1.15.3.876-ad6e39743 at the moment (I see there is a new one, but from history I expect this hasn’t been fixed as I think it is the Plex XBox One Store app that is the issue).
I usually stay very current, and will try the latest version, but expect the issue will still exist.
If there is anything else I can provide please let me know.
I have this problem since a very long time, at least for 6 month now and it’s driving me crazy.
Plex Server: 1.15.3.876-ad6e39743 on Windows 10x64
Client: Webclient running in Firefox on Mac OS most of the time
Problem description:
Most of my mkv files have embedded srt subtitles, but I guess it happens with external srt subtitles too. After some time (it differs everytime) the subs are simply not displayed anymore. When I pause and select some other subs or “subtitles off” and than back to the initially selected srt, the subs are back again, only to be gone again after some time.
I see this problem exists since 2017, it really is time to fix this. I will try to make it reproducable a little better and also can provide logfiles if needed.
Same issue on my xbox one. Subtitles disappear when nobody talks for at east 20/30 seconds. as long as there is dialogue, there is no problem. Our workaround when is happens is to stop and play again
