Plex losing subtitle while playing

They’ve been in deep thought about this since July:

I have the same problem using the web player. Maybe fix this kind of things rather than adding a trillion useless features in every update.

I am on the latest Plex Server version (1.9.6.4385), but still have the same issue with the new Xbox One app. Tested last night, and without forcing the subtitles to be burned, they disappear after a while.
Note this issue did not occur on the old app.

Cheers

The subtitles disappear about 6 minutes in for me, whether I’m watching on my server or my Xbox. This happens with both types, plugin or downloaded, subtitles.

Oddly, if I switch to using VLC the downloaded subtitles are still disappearing!
(I checked the .srt files, nothing is missing there)

One would think rolling back a faulty piece of code takes a tiny bit less than a month, but who am I to know - just a random developer lurking around.

I agree, this is ridiculously easy to fix for the customers pending a new version.

For me, skipping forward or back sometimes fixes the problem (for about 5 minutes), but not always; in those cases I need to skip again to force Plex to start buffering, and then the subs return.
I’ve read in another discussion that UTF-8 SRTs wouldn’t have the problem: not true with most recent Plex Beta and Chrome Web player.

No problem on Apple TV for me !! (4tgh Gen, both “release” and latest Test Flight versions, with latest Plex Server beta)…

I’m still seeing the issue with latest server version, in web player.

Nothing mentioned on the release notes regarding fixing this:
New
(Web) Updated Plex Web to 3.23.1

Fixes
(Statistics) Add database fixup to cleanup statistics tables (#7520)
(DVR) Resolve crash when recording radio channels or channels without video stream (#7229)
(Search) Duplicate albums/tracks could be returned in search.
(Photos) Videos added via Camera Upload might have the wrong date (#7517).
(Sync) Clients wouldn’t account for files bigger than 2GB when calculating the used space. (#7664)
Resolve a crash (#7689)
(Transcoder) Playback could fail near the end of a video, most often when using automatic quality. (#7691)

My issue is exactly the opposite. No matter what subtitle setting I choose in the new Xbox One app’s main/general settings menu, subtitles just randomly START showing. I don’t want subtitles enabled but regardless of the setting, every now and then (±30% of the time I play a new episode), the subtitles just start showing at the beginning of the show and I have to manually switch it off.

…same issue on the new Xbox One player, Web Player and also Playstation 4 player. Linux Server, Version 1.9.4.4325.

All external subs stop playing after a few minutes. If I turn subtitles off and on again, they will restart, but again stop after a few minutes. Direct play vs transcode has no impact.

This only started happening within the last few months – and occurs with media and subtitle files that previously functioned correctly. Files also successfully tested with latest version of VLC.

Windows Server: 1.9.6.4401
Webplayer (locally and remotely), Android, and on Roku

Am not interested in downgrading, nor in using the “always burn” workaround (which I have not attempted).

Am extremely happy with Plex, feel my PlexPass subscription was well worth it. Would like to see this subtitles issue fixed or, at the very least, formally explained.

Also having this problem on Xbox player

The main subtitles issue (subtitles disappearing after seeking or resume) has finally been found and now fixed. As others pointed out: it did just miss the release just gone. Hopefully it will be in the next Plex Media Server release (assuming no issues are found during testing).

The XBox issue has been found and fixed. That should be in an upcoming Xbox client release (pending QA also).

Again, apologies for the inconvenience, and hopefully subtitles will be fixed for all soon enough

It’s amazing, good work, but I have a question that many people say about the “1.9.6 / 1.9.7” version, in my case I have 1.9.4 Plex Media Server, how can I see this new version? , maybe I need a type of Beta access? I need your help guys because I’m about to go crazy, these subtitles disapear when I advance or back my movies.

regards

The level of service for a software users pay for is amazing (not).

As to downgrading: do you need to uninstall the entire server, and set it all up again with version 1.8.4.4249 ?

You can just uninstall and reinstall Plex Media Server. Your dB and settings will be intact except maybe for a few settings in the Web Interface. I just went back to 1.8.4 on one of my servers as well.

Experienced this yesterday, first issue was on my tv, with samsung’s smart tv app. The episode cut after around 20 minutes (this has happened to several shows before, first the audio cuts, then the episode cuts) - then I went to the computer to finish watching it in the web player when I noticed the subtitles disappeared shortly after I had found where it cut on the TV.

Uninstalled plex and installed 1.8.4.4249 and played the episode again today - subtitles working like a charm.
Have not tried on the TV yet so see if that issue was resolved as well

Plex for Xbox One (v2.0.4) contains the subtitle fix for XBox One users!

As for the reset of us, a Plex Media Server release containing the last remaining subtitles fix is being tested now. Will make a note in this thread once we know when that will be released.

Also, Plex It does not work in the Xbox One App
