PLEX Low and High Volume Issue - Low Voice/Dialogue Audio Volume and High SFX/Music for Movies/TV Shows on Roku - PlayStation - Xbox - Smart TV Player

I’ve been reading dozens of threads for the past few hours with no real solution to this problem.

I’m experiencing low dialogue and high SFX audio when watching movies and shows. It’s so bad that I have to turn up the volume when there is dialogue and turn it down during action/music scenes.

I have tested this issue and can confirm it while playing media on the following devices/apps:

  • Directly through my PLEX Media Server (Samsung TV with sound bar)
  • PlayStation 4 (Samsung TV with sound bar)
  • Xbox One (Samsung TV with sound bar)
  • Roku Ultra (Guest bedroom, Toshiba TV with factory speakers)
  • Roku (Garage, TCL TV with factory speakers)
  • Roku (Users house, LG TV with factory speakers)

I’ve read that people successfully switched some Dolby 5.1 settings to Stereo on there devices, but I’ve yet to find these settings on any of my TV’s/Roku/Consoles. I also found that re-encoding my media would help, but this isn’t an option as I have far too much content.

Does anyone have any solutions that would universally work across all users devices?

16gb RAM
OS running off of 256GB SSD
Media running off of 2 x 10TB and 1 x 8TB, 7200RPM HDD’s

Is it a downmix if you’re just taking the L and R channels and only playing them? That is not a proper downmix.

A true downmix will not lose any center channel audio info at all. That’s why it’s called a mix.

So, what is plex really doing here?

After about a month of looking for different settings and troubleshooting, I still haven’t found a good solution. Unfortunately, my soundbar does not have adjustable channels. I’m not finding settings in the Xbox, PS4 and Roku apps for things like “Normalise Downmixed Volume”, “Volume Boost”, and passthrough options. As a matter of fact, there aren’t many audio options at all.

It would be nice to have an audio setting at the source (PLEX Server Install) that would transcode the audio into stereo output. Looks like I’m out of luck unless I install a surround sound system. I appreciate the advice.
