I’ve only been using Plex for a day, but it worked yesterday. Music plays normally in Plex on my iPhone and in a web browser on the same Mac with the Plex app issue.
In the Mac app I can edit the metadata etc, but not play anything.
I’ve tried refreshing the App, Quitting the app, Scanning the library files, Refreshing all metadata, restarting the Mac. Does anyone know how I can get the Plex Mac app to play media again?
Did you figure this out yet? I have the exact same issue, the Mac app gives this error when trying to play from a Synology-based Plex server. Every other client I have streams just fine from it - Chrome on the same Mac, iPad, Xbox, etc.
Now, what’s interesting is that I have a second Plex server on the same network with the same media library running on a Windows PC. My plan is to eventually shutdown the PC server and use the NAS server only.
Anyways, the Mac app streams from my Windows PC just fine. It is only the NAS server that it fails on. Same desktop app, same file, same network, etc. But the server versions are different:
I downloaded the app ‘Plex Media Player (for macOS Home Theater PCs)’. The first time opening PMP it has the TV layout. There’s an icon in the top right corner to change it to desktop layout. At this point it’s basically the same as the standard ‘Plex for Mac’ app, but playing content works!
Note I’m using PMP version 2.58.0.1076-38e019da. I read somewhere (perhaps in the app) that they’re going to discontinue the desktop layout in this app soon, so grab it while it works.
I took a different path last night. Decided to bite the bullet and upgrade PMS on the Synology. I followed these instructions, which were pretty straightforward.
Afterwards, the desktop app works perfectly with the Synology server.
This is probably a good thing, since the Synology package centre version (1.18.5) is about 1.5 years out of date. I gather Synology is very slow to update their packages.
