Plex Media Player can't be opened because Apple cannot check it for errors

This may have been caused because I use to have a server installed on the same iMac, but I got a NAS and installed plex on that instead. I dragged the iMac plex to the Trashcan, but I have already run into files that should have been deleted but weren’t. I had no media files on the iMac, ever. I was looking to add hard drives and got the NAS instead. On the Plex Server (a Synology NAS) everything seems to work. I haven’t tried connecting anything to it until now, when I tried to get the iMac to work. As small as it seems, I was trying to watch a movie full screen, and not have the browser window frame, and thats when I tried downloading the Plex Media Player. I downloaded it yesterday, and again today. On the Synology I just downloaded a new version, 1.19.5.3112 and installed it.

Did you download the official version of Plex Media Player (version 2.58) or Plex for Mac (version 1.17.0) from the official Plex download page?
https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/?lang=#plex-app

Usually those are properly notarized and can be checked nicely by Apple.
This should have nothing to do with you deleting your previous Plex Media Server app from that Mac

I can use ‘Info’ to see the file information and it says 2.58.0.1076.

Hmm… seeing it too.
Not sure if that’s how it’s always been or if there’s some hiccup with the app signing. I’ll ask around.

If you still want to trust the app you should be able to open it after confirming this in your Mac’s system settings (click Open Anyway in System Settings > Security > General next to the text explaining that macOS didn’t open “Plex Media Server” because it’s not from a verified developer)

System Settings or System Preferences? I don’t see a System Settings file anywhere and doing a search doesn’t find one either. Under Security and Privacy there is an 'Allow Apps downloaded from 1) App Store and 2) App Store and identified developers. The second option is checked.

my bad… I’m running macOS in a different language and should stop translating stuff after midnight
It’s System Preferences!
If you try to run an app that is not in line with those settings, you’ll see some text below those 2 options (‘The app “xyz” has been blocked because macOS couldn’t verify the developer’ – something along those lines). Next to that text will be a button that offers to open it anyway.

That seemed to work. I’ll finish linking and test it but I was able to install it.
