Plex Media Player Embedded for Pi 3 B+

Edit: Damn I pulled another TMI Motormouth Forum Barf!:yum: Have fun and find my answer please!

I’m running the latest embedded x86_64 on my Intel Nuc. I had been running 1.7.12 or something super old! lol It’s a direct play device that needs no transcoding and streams to my Dolby Atmos/DTS-X system just fine with my movie and TV series.

I finally got around to setting up my FiOS cable card in an HDHomeRun Prime. At first i set it up with my main PMS on a Windows 10 machine with more than enough umph to transcode several streams, etc. At first it seemed to be setting up fine, but of course Windows decided to do an update which appeared to Fubar the HDHomerun Setup App and connection to the device.

I decided I would see if I could get it running on my Ubuntu Desktop I have PMS running on with no content. That did the trick and all of that seems to be working fine.

Here is my issue the Live TV GUI does not show a “Guide” anywhere. Instead it lists the server connection as Guide-PMS-Ubuntu. When I click on it or the three dots that bring you into the tab arrangement screen. There it lists the server as Discover-PMS-Ubuntu.

There is either something I’m missing here or there is something wrong with PMP as a whole when in TV mode. I noticed I have the access same issue with the Windows Store Plex App when I switch it to TV mode.

Interestingly in the public channel Roku release it actually seems to work properly. Everything looks nearly exactly the same with one caveat. When you click on the LiveTV button it brings up nearly identical screen of now playing etc. and just below the first row it has a button for guide and one for recordings. In my PMP Windows App and standalone Nuc there is only a button for recording.

Any insight would be appreciated. I know it’s been several years since I’ve been on here. I too was another way back user that had just dialed in PHT with some of my own custom coding with a little extra functionality, and had setup my own Windows Media Remote LIRC so I could integrate control for several Professional Home Control systems like URC Pro, RTI, Elan, etc.
At that time I was running 1st/2ng gen Chromeboxes that converted to x86_64 embedded boxes. I was very active in the forums during the original switch to PMS. After I had my system working solidly over my network. I have a PMP embedded NUC Celeron 5th gen running the last version from 2017 still available for download on this site. Max compatibility test was the full size BD H.265 version of Blade Runner the Final Cut (4K HDR with 5.2.2 Channel Dolby Atmos only Remuxed into an MKV Container for ease of PMS sharing.)

Rainbow screen with the latest(2.31) version on Pi 3 A+. Is there any differences from B+?

None of this images are working - just a black screen… is this normal?
I have tested 2.28, 2.29 and 2.31 but no luck - all what i get is a black screen (over HDMI)

I’ve just installed 2.28 on a Pi3B+ with no issues…
Could be the IMG didn’t write to the SD/USB clean?

I did it with Win32DiskImager like the HowTo said, but no luck - just a black Screen - thats all…

Same here.
Perhaps re-download 2.28 and check the MD5 hash matches.

I always clear the SD using DISKPART to delete partitions and then create a fresh partition and write the IMG using Win32DiskImager as per the instruction (as you mention)

Ok. thanks for your help. I will take a new empty SD, reinstall the image again and see what happens.
By the way - a question: Are these images for the Pi 3B+ “only” or can i also use a normal Pi 3B?

EDIT: I tried it again but no luck - still a black screen… damn…
Is there maybe a restriction for the SD? I use a 16GB Card but only 500MBs are in use…

Are you downloading a fresh copy from HERE or re-using the IMG you’ve already downloaded…if you haven’t already I would download a fresh copy and compare the MD5 hash to ensure you haven’t got a corrupt copy.
Just realised the hash files aren’t in the D/L location, so maybe just try a fresh download anyway?

Your partitions sound OK - you should end up with a 511MB (according to Windows) partition called LIBREELEC, and a 2nd partition (with the remaining space of the SD) unformatted.

Is your SD Class10. I don’t “think” that should make a difference/cause the black screen, but it might.

I think that the images are backwards compatible. According to the post above v2.28 was the first that supports 3B+, so if you have a 3B perhaps try the v2.27 to see if that works.

I’m not Linux expert - I just voicing my experiences thus far

Hi dmmsta, thanks again for your help.
I downloaded all files from your mentioned location - i even tried the original 1.3 version but also this version is not working.
My microSD is a Kingston gold with 45MB/s write and 90MB/s read - more then fast enough for the Pi 3B (using 8(!) Pi’s at the moment with this microSDs for various things)
Checking the MD5 is tricky because of missing checksums… any idea where i can get the MD5 hash?

Hey GB.
At the risk of sounding silly - where do I find/configure the Update share.
SMB is enabled in the settings, just not sure where to find - and then upload the .tar for updates.

We’d need one fo the Dev guys to upload the checksums to the nightly folders.

Strange that it isn’t working - as everything seems to be fine…I’ve just re-imaged to the 2.31 version (latest) with no issues.

This one needs someone with more geek-skills than me to suggests some troubleshooting options…

ok - so lets wait for a Dev - maybe he can upload the hashes…
The Pi 3B and my SDs are all working - tried to install a normal Raspian and all is fine.

Did you try the 2.27 version?
I guess that is last version prior to 3B+ support…might make difference…?

I will do this right now - lets see what happens

Ok - tested the 2.27 - black screen - lo luck again - really strange that no image is working, but the Raspian is.
EDIT: Got it to work! - on an old Plasma-TV, but the Screen is streched… lol.
On my Monitor it doesnt work… seems there is something in the Image which rejects Monitors with 1680x1050 resolution…
I did not find a menu entry where i can set the ScreenResolution… any hints about this?
Tested again on my Monitor… black screen… WTF is this ■■■■???

I think I’m having the same issue as tommeh. I’ve got a RPi3 B+ with a HiFiBerry DAC+ HAT running PMP embedded 2.31. I have the OS running off of a Kingston 8GB class 4 microSD card, and the UI is laggy. Video and music playback are smooth, but doing anything with the UI (volume control, just moving the mouse, etc.) is frequently laggy.

I tried writing the image to a 32GB USB 3.0 stick thinking the class 4 microSD card was to blame for the poor performance, but I couldn’t get the RPi to boot from that USB (it boots from USB fine with a Raspian image).

Two questions: Is the class 4 microSD card not suitable for this application, and has anyone been successful in booting PMP embedded on an RPi 3B+ off of a USB stick? Thanks!

same pet peeve as others have said. Ran PMP embedded 2.31 on raspi 3b (not +) and 64gb u3 samsung card. UI has a bit of lag otherwise playback is flawless. Missing Wifi and network cache should be allowed higher than 75mb. With larger card we should be to able to cache much more. even as high as 500. No other noticeable issues. please make UI tweaks, wifi and a user customizable network cache and this would be perfect imo.

Switched to a U1 microSD card and the lagginess stopped. Runs perfect now, except for no Tidal integration yet :frowning:

@gbooker02 Will the Plex Embedded OS get the new UI that’s been hitting everything else?

I’m currently running the “official” 1.3.11 embedded version on my Pi 3B (not 3B+) and it works perfectly except that I can’t control it from my Harmony remote, as I can RasPlex using the same hardware. I’m using the MSI RemotePi Board for Pi 3 B and Pi 3 B+ module as power switch and IR receiver.

Should I be trying a later build? Does anyone else have this configuration working? Any suggestions gratefully received - it’s driving me crazy having to use a usb keyboard!
