I’ve now upgraded to a Pi Model 3B+ and the latest version (as of a couple of nights ago) of PMP. It works great but I still can’t control it from my harmony remote (via MSI RemotePi board).
Anyone else had issue with multiple key presses? Everything is fine after powering on, but soon after, keys start double then triple pressing and it impossible to navigate until I power off again.
Installed latest embedded PMP build on RPi3B+. There are no CEC remote issues that didn’t exist with the previous build on RPi2. I now have support for Live TV (although no EPG) and UNO UI. Support for Pi3’s Bluetooth audio would make this a pretty cool player
Would this PMP build work on new Raspberry Pi 4?
Try it - but i dont think so…
Hi,
I’m a Kodi user, but a friend of mine loves Plex.
Has anyone here used both, specifically on the Pi?
Is there a Plex remote control App for iPhone / Android which works with this Embedded player? Or does the embedded player support an IR dongle, like Kodi (LibreElec) does?
I’m very happy with LibreElec, but I’d certainly be willing to take a peek at a Plex option to flex muscle on a simple Pi.
Anyone used this much as their daily driver? Thanks for the hard work.
I’ve moved over from the legacy Samsung App to the Embedded player on a Pi.
If you’re connecting via HDMI, then your native TV remote should work fine with the Plex UI (via CEC). You can also use the Plex iOS/Android apps to control the Plex UI.
I’ve used Kodi (OMSC) in the past and although Kodi is a lot more configurable, I prefer the hands-off approach with Plex.
The both have a place, and a use-case. For me I didn’t want to tinker anymore. Plex ticks that box.
I ended up getting it working fairly easily, it’s really not bad, if a little slow.
I also tried Rasplex which was a superior product, although sadly no longer worked on. It seemed faster and looked better.
None the less, the official addon isn’t too bad, it worked, it quite well, just felt laggy and ‘buffered’ a few times.
Good of them to work on it though, I’ll see if I can convince my pal to switch over.
I want to try install this on my RPi 3 B+ as I’m having issues with the libeelec + Plex addon. Dumb question, but I’m assuming i download and install the image that’s titled RPi2?
No, you will need to use one of the nightly builds, linked earlier. The rp2 wont boot.

Don’t ask me which, though… Some work better than others.
Don’t
haha thankyou, i will trial and error, much appreciated
Question, I’ve got it installed OK. How the heck to I enable/connect the embedded RPi it to my home WiFi?
My main PC is Windows. I have tried to SSH via Ethernet as I found some instructions but when I try to SSH using putty i just get ‘connection refused’ error.
hey
so… the “embedded” plex player (for raspi/intel) has not received a lot of love in the last years… personally I would never use wifi again for media streaming and go for something like nvidia shield - and always use cable.
The raspberry is a nice thing to take with you and connect a USB drive to it, that way you can enhance a hotel room TV for example (combined with a couple USB sticks / drives for media)
But I would never expect good network/usb/drive performance from it.
it was a nice proof of concept and the new raspi 4B has 4k support and real gigabit ethernet. so maybe… some developer will see this and show it some love.
about the wifi… I don’t think this was ever implemented as the binaries are officially for the 2B+
so you will have to play on the command line and use nasty hacks like wpa_supplicant for WPA2
but if you can’t log in… can you check if you disabled it in the GUI by accident?
I would recommend to use Kodi/OSMC and run the plex addon. It has an “autostart” function. Works for me. (I have a vero 4k now, saving for a shield // proper miniATX pc build)
I love the raspberry pi and others (odroid/etc… SoC) but I never would expect stellar performance from them (like… fullHD without stuttering/tearing. a dream…)
The one that worked for me, linked above, has “rpi2-arm” in the file name but runs good on 3b+
I think I’m pretty much screwed. My server is actually an NVIDIA SHIELD, located in my office so it can be ethernet connected to my router. I have no choice but to use wifi where my TV is where I’m using the client. I’ve tried Kodi with Plex addon and it won’t play any videos. It just spins a blue circle for a minute then goes back out to the video play menu. So frustrating!!!
I wonder if I’m just better off moving my Shield server into the room with the TV, connecting is with HDMI and use it as my player as well as server and just making it use WiFi and hope it still reads the media library on my NAS ok over the WiFi.
shield makes a very good player. yes.
maybe run the server on the raspberry? Just to test. As long as you don’t need to do transcoding that could work fine. modern NAS can run plex server in a VM. very good performance on synology/qnap/freenas even with low-spec processors.
be sure to check the dashboard for errors / check reachability (are you streaming via the internet, locally, etc… there is so much that can go wrong…)
By the way: this thread is for player on raspberry / embedded, let’s stay on-topic
also: good luck.
wifi work on 2.4GHz type, as for playback got smooth cause the server transcode automatically, still got random freeze, don’t know where to start
EDIT - My issue suddenly went away. Can;t use it for what I want because there is no cast button.
Guess the web app is it.
I’ve been having some issues when using going to PMP after a day or so not in use.
Switch to the HDMI channel, and it’s waiting at the user page, I can hear it accept my user PIN, and then there is some form of playback in the backgroud, but the user page never moves.
Only way around is a reboot.
So I crontab’d a reboot twice daily, but this lead to CEC turning my TV on (even with the line in the /flash/config.txt file) and because I reboot in the middle of the night the TV comes on and stays that way until the morning…
So…
- Has anyone else experienced this weird sort of hang after a period of inactivity?
- Is there a way to restart Plex Media Player service rather than reboot the whole Pi.
