keep us updated, interested to see how it goes
awesome possum. thanks and keep us updated!
Great stuff. Any idea if it supports HD audio?
Thanks @NedtheNerd.
Don’t forget your 2.5A PSU’s
Okay, i got to ask: Last week i installed 2 RPis in my parents home. One as a Server one as a client. Will this RPi bring me advantages so that i should return the old ones and wait for the new? I suppose transcoding wont work on this machine as well, right? What do you guys think, how long will it take until every software (plex media server, rasplex, vnc server etc) will work with the rpi 3? I am really considering returning the now “old” ones. What about Power Usage? WIll there be a huge difference on the bill if i let both Pis run 24/7 and replace them with version 3?

Too early to tell how significant the performance upgrade will be in practice but the Pi 3 is a fair amount quicker according to reports. The extra .5A power consumption wouldn’t be remotely noticeable as far as power consumption is concerned.
Should you replace them? Depends on how long you’re prepared (for your parents) to be without Plex. It might take months* before things are stable.
*i’ve no actual idea regarding the amount of time required.
Ok, in case it takes month (like even 2 months) i will not upgrade. I thought maybe its just like switching SD cards, install a new raspbian and thats about it… But if its more than this, i will let them use this combination for 1.5 more years until the rpi 4 is out and stable. Might get another RPi for another TV as a client in 2-3 months but then i will degrade the rpi 2 that serves as a server right now to a client and replace it with a new rpi 3 then (which is hopefully stable by then)
Hey @NedtheNerd,
please answer this in detail on Github as well, i already made a request for this:
Thanks a lot,

If it supports HD audio I’ll give this another go…
on its way…
Wait, is it really compatible to the cases for the Pi2? I read somewhere that its not
@chenks: OK, sorry. I just was a little bit (too) exited I suppose… @noreason: the website mentioned this was compatible. We’ll see. Otherwise It still can serve for my other pi’s.

I have read in reviews today (not sure which one) Pi3 is compatible with Pi2 cases, except the LEDs are in different places. If that bothers you, get the official Pi3 case.
fingers crossed that transcoding for a (just one, a mobile!) device is possible. Hopefully there will be a + version with an extra gig or two of RAM.

If you have turned off the LEDs (which I have) then it makes no difference!

It’s the CPU that determines whether it’s powerful enough for transcoding if you are using this as a PMS server not RAM, Plex Inc disables any transcoding on ARM devices for PMS. As this is the Rasplex section can we please keep this topic on that, for PMS on an RPi please post here https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/145717/i-have-pms-running-on-raspberry-pi-2.

Easy to get excited, can you edit the post to get rid of the invoice, thanks.

Rasplex 1.0.2 supports HD audio on current RPi’s, see release notes.
‘- Support for libdcadec to decode DTS-HD MA to 8 channel LPCM (disable DTS capable receiver and enable DTS decode in Preferences)’
Not true Passthrough, never will on current RPi’s, including the RPi3.

For anyone interested the best review on the web at the moment, including performance/power consumption data http://makezine.com/2016/02/28/meet-the-new-raspberry-pi-3/
