Hello Plex support
Plex Media Scanner is causing BSOD on Windows 11 every night on my PC, without fail. I’ve unchecked most settings, but nothing makes a difference.
Recently I did a clean reinstall of Windows 11 and restored my Plex Media Server from a backup. Was not experiencing any problems like this, before reinstalling W11.
When crash occurs, BSOD reports: DRIVER_OVERRAN_STACK_BUFFER
Using the Windows Debug app, analysis of Minidump file reports Plex Media Scanner as the Process_Name.

I have uploaded my Plex Server Logs and copy of the most recent Windows 11 Minidump file. I would really appreciate some analysis by a Plex representative, so I can fix this problem.
Potentially related: ever since the latest update on Linux, my scanner is constantly crashing. It will either be stuck mid scan and won’t detect anything new, or just wont scan at all until I restart PMS. Really annoying.
Hi Dr_Tone
Thanks for replying to my message!
Since posting my original message on the forum, the Plex Scanner has stopped crashing Windows to BSOD. It was when I discovered that “Credit Detection” was also an option for my Web Series & Internet Videos libraries, that the problem was fixed. Originally, I had only turned it off in my Movies and TV Show libraries. Once that setting was turned off in all libraries, the nightly crashing has stopped.
It should be impossible but somehow plex manages to do it. There are dozens of reports of BSODs with credit detection in various threads over the last year or more.
There is nothing wrong with my hardware. I am fully aware of problems with 13th/14th gen. Intel CPUs. My system uses an AMD 5800X with latest BIOS updates installed.
I have already run System checks, like Memory check, etc…
Before I turned off all Credit Detection settings in Plex, my PC would crash at the same time every night, and produce identical Windows dump files, indicating that the Plex Media Scanner was to blame. I uploaded my Plex logs and Windows crash logs, so that someone from Plex could analyse.
I’ll never know which exact setting fixed the problem on my Plex Server.
I kept turning off as many “specialty” settings as I could find.
In Scheduled Tasks, I only have these turned ON:
Backup Database
Optimize Database
Remove Old Bundles
Remove Old Cache Files
In Library settings, all Thumbnails, Markers, etc… = Never
