Plex Media Server crashing when opening Android mobile app and selecting a library

please go to Settings - Server - General - Show Advanced.

  1. Disable Crash Reporting for now & save
  2. When it crashes:
    a. Capture the logs of the failure
    b. Get the DMP file (put in a ZIP file of its own)
    c. Attach both ZIP files here.

I will forward to Engineering immediately.

Hi can someone help me please i have the same problem when i run plex on mobile my plex media server which is on my computer it starts spitting i saw a little all posts but i’m having trouble understanding i’m not too good at english i need help please.

@ChuckPa I tried like someone else suggested and did the upgrade to the latest version again after previously downgrading then reinstalled the android mobile app and mine is working now.

@blitzkrieggold

Would you please detail this for me step-by-step ?

Please also share the specific version(s) used so I can relay to the teams.

in the messages that I was able to read this is what I could understand but on the other hand how we do to downgrade the update is it the plex server installed on my computer that I have to downgrade I suppose there is a tutorial or a video and we can still use the premium plex? and another question is the premium and lifetime pass. Actually? because a monthly subscription and year plus for life I find it weird anyway.

@ChuckPa

So I was originally on 1.21.0.3711 and everything was working fine. After updating past that version to 1.21.1.3766 and updating to anything beyond that like 1.21.1.3830 my plex server would crash when opening the android app. I followed the instructions on another forum post to downgrade to 1.21.0.3711 on ubuntu and things worked again. After that I upgraded straight to 1.21.1.3830 and reinstalled the app on my phone and now it’s working.

Is it possible that 3766 was the problem ?

I was wondering that too but I did upgrade to a later version from that version and it was still broken. But upgrading from a version prior to 3766 to a version after 3766 worked. Maybe there was just a specific issue upgrading to 3766 from 3711 that stuck around but didn’t happen upgrading to 3830.

good me I uninstall and reinstall the application from my phone and that has more or less, solve the problem sometimes I have to close the application and relaunch so that the images appear in the right categories but apart from it does not spit more. So it’s okay and I take this opportunity to ask you I would like to know if the plex-pass subscription to 119 you pay only once or you will pay every year at 119. there are 3 different subscriptions I still find it suspicious ? thank you in advance

@alexandre_errera

$119 USD is a one-time, lifetime , price when purchased from Plex web site. (Higher through app stores)

You will not need pay again.

we agree 119 you pay once and it’s over?

Yes I am in France :grin:

If that’s how it’s shown then yes, you’re good.

So I will say I just did a fresh install of PLM on my windows 10 machine…the fresh install was unrelated to the issue in this thread. That being said, after install I noticed a feature for sending push notifications from the server. I turned that on as I thought it was a decent feature. I actually received a push notification about one of my friends accessing server from new device… Then I started noticing the issues mentioned in this thread.

Now - I saw that someone mentioned deleted mobile app and re-installing fixed for them. So I tried that, but while I was re-installing it remembered I toggled on that push notification feature. So while it was downloading I turned it off from my plex media server. Opened newly installed mobile app, and it worked.

Obviously I’ve changed multiple variables here, so it’s not necessarily clear on which one was the fix…but I will say since I re-installed the app it worked…just out of curiosity I turned push notifications back on and it is still working (yet I haven’t actually gotten any new push notifications)…

I just attempted to re-create this situation and have successfully logged in on a different device in my house and got a push notification. Going to see if now I open plex on mobile device if it crashes.

so it did not crash the server…

Version 1.21.1.3876

Attached is the zip file. Inside contains the DMP and logs during this time. Let me know if you need anything else.Plex_Media_Server_Crash_2020.01.09.zip (655.3 KB)

to note, this was happening previously on Version 1.21.1.3830 as well. I didn’t mean to get the update, but it happened. Happening on both versions.

I’m working with the Android team trying to understand why some see the problem and others dont.

The only Android device I have here is the Nvidia Shield Pro. It won’t cause the server to crash.

One suggestion was to completely uninstall the mobile app, clear the app cache, and install fresh (whatever that means on Android)

The apparent thinking is based on how the android apps update versus install fresh.

Has this been tried ?

(can you tell I have virtually no clue about Android? :rofl: )

Yeah, I’ve done this on my end with reinstalling the app, but I think the issue is my family that isn’t me using the plex app and casting. Everyone has said they aren’t casting from their phones anymore, but I still haven’t found the culprit.

I’m using a Pixel 3 but i know some of the others have Samsung’s, iPhones etc.

I couldn’t think of anything common and i’m obviously no Plex engineer, but looking at the logs it doesn’t seem to show the critical error that is causing it to crash.

I checked my event viewer logs at the application level and system level but I don’t see any interference with the Plex Media Server either. I also did the step someone talked about and disabled my firewall through Windows Defender, but that didn’t seem to work either.

I think it has been more ā€œstableā€ since the update, but it still is occurring.

Thanks for looking into this.

My pixel 4a video keeps crashing and sometimes the whole plex app on android. The sever hosted on win 10 doesn’t crash. The video is coming from hdhomerun prime
