Plex Media Server Crashing

Server Version#: 1.15.4.994 (Windows 10 64 bit)
Player Version#: 3.99.2 Web App

PMS will intermittently crash throughout the day.

I’ve looked at the logs and didn’t see anything stand out. I am however, seeing “Failed to upload crashdump”.

If someone can guide me on what may be the culprit I’d really appreciate it.

Do you have anything on your Windows box that is modifying your network? Examples are VPNs, docker configurations, some things that are possible but unlikely with Cygwin?

Similar issue here and also very frustrated…I’m not sure what to do anymore, I am on Verizon FIOS fiber optics so I have a very good connection 75up/75down and my switch in my home is gigabit (everything is hard wired that matters). I am at the newest Plex version 1.15.4.994, My Plex server is a Dell Server running Windows Server 2016 with power options at optimal performance. I’ve tried everything I can think of so I am pleading with someone for some input. I’ve changed it to run Plex as a service thinking maybe the service was failing but it is still enabled even when Plex stops responding remotely. Now here is the issue, everyday without rhyme or reason my Plex server becomes disconnected, the service is still running however I cannot get to it remotely, starting Plex again gets it back up and running but it is no longer consistently connected at all, in the infancy days of Plex I ALWAYS had a solid connection, anyone else seeing this? I’ve tried every conceivable option in Plex without a resolution, I even created a task to reboot my server with a powershell script and task daily @ 5am, when it comes back up the service starts and it is running again but it could be anywhere from 3 to 12 hours before it mysteriously drops again. I’m a little frustrated because after paying all that money for a Plex Pass I am still having these issues and unable to use my Plex to its full potential. Give me some feedback please, I just turns on debugging so I will provide logs once I see it has disconnected again.

@zukdj If you’re saying your remote connectivity keeps failing, I run this on Debian and have noticed that even though I’m forwarding external 32400 to the server’s 32400, I still have to check the box to manually specify. For some reason, without that, it keeps defaulting to searching for connections on port 0 which frankly doesn’t exist. Have you tried this?

If that fails, have you tried enabling the hyper-v role and running this in a supported linux distro? You could configure drives as passthrough and give the VM native drive access, granted you’ll need to do it slowly (not all drives at once) because you’ll have to migrate your files to the Linux drives, or set up iscsi which I strongly discourage.

I’ve done so much troubleshooting that quite frankly I am tired, I used to have a solid setup, something changed. I will try the check box for port 32400, I assume you mean the check box in Plex?

Yes, the box for manually specifying a port on the Remote Access page in Plex server config. Mine fails if I don’t enable that and type in the default port. FWIW

OK, I’m not going the VM route on Hyper-v, I really think someone will have an answer…I hope.

Strangely enough, I just looked in my Plugins folder in %appdata% and all my Plugins are there however none of them are in the Plugins directory in Plex. Are they no longer allowing plugins?

Please take a look at my logs and see if you see anything strange.

Started it up before I went to bed at 3am and it was crashed again this morningPlex Media Server Logs_2019-05-18_08-03-45.zip (4.4 MB)

I think it is dropping the remote connection but I am not sure why, all the ports are correctly setup in the router, I’ve even tried putting it in the DMZ without any luck. This was working seamlessly without a hitch until roughly 8 months ago. I need help with the logs, can someone look, I do not know what I an looking for.

Have you manually specified the port in Plex? See my post here: PLEX remote access keeps disconnecting, bug?

I have, I’ve even disabled uPnP in my router and set all the ports manually, it’s up for a while and then gone. Tried using different ports as well (28910 and letting it find one on it’s own 19404). It is currently working on 19404 but I suspect it will crash again but I’ll let it go for now and see what happens, if this is a bug I hope they resolve it. I just upgraded to a BETA version (1.15.6.1079), we will see if there is any change there but I didn’t see any obvious bug fixes so I doubt it. This is definitely a bug in PLEX if you ask me, all of my other port forwarding works perfectly without issue.

Hey sorry for the delayed response… was not home.

I do not have a VPN or docker. I do have several Plex related apps such as Tautulli, PlexConnect & Ombi.

I guess I found something I really really hate about Plex, there is no real support other than lots of people telling you things to try that have already been tried multiple times. I mean that with no disrespect to the forum members, I know you always give it your best shot. I gotta say, real support would be nice since I have been fighting with this issue for nearly a year now and every time I post about it nobody ever looks at the logs even though they asked me to attach them. I attached logs earlier in this post hoping someone could give them a look finally and see what they could find, no joy. I guess what really bugs me is I purchased a Plex Pass quite a while ago yet I can’t get support when I really need it. The Plex Pass would be nice if I could actually use Plex to its potential, restarting it every couple hours is not how it should work. Yes, forum members are helpful but there is only so much building, changing and rebuilding you can do before you get so frustrated your rather just throw in the towel and say F it!

I did take a look at your logs, but just like my logs, I can’t tell why the server is constantly crashing. I’m sorry @zukdj.

Yes, I rummaged through as well, my guess is it is a glitch in the program code that has followed the builds without resolution. There are way too many reporting the same issue. The bad thing is until the developers find it most of us are going to be able to do nothing but sit on our hands. I did revert mine back to a 1.7.5… version and the issue mostly went away however I really don’t want to go that route especially since I just got all the TV stuff working correctly on my HDHR. I’ve rebuilt everything thinking maybe it was my server build, no dice, same issue which just further confirms this is something to do with the Plex build itself.

I don’t see why the plex staff can’t just operate a trouble ticket system with a knowledge-base. It would save the user base SO MUCH DAMN TIME and then we wouldn’t have to reinvent the wheel every time a problem came up, plus it would highlight serious bugs quicker.

Agreed, I changed my browser from Google to Firefox and as strange as that seems now when I open Plex with FF I am staying connected…so far. What browsers are you using?

I use Chrome for personal and FF for work. Gotta keep my bookmarks and passwords and all that separate.

It’s not just Chrome having the connection issue though, when my server can’t connect the plex web app says its unavailable, and so does my phone app.

The one other thing I did was disconnect the sharing of my music, there was probably 140GB of music on it. Nobody was really using it so it was just a waste putting it out there.
