PLEX media server incorrect name for locally stored content

Server Version#: 1.25.6.5577

i recently added some content in one of the folders on my NAS that is being monitored by PLEX, but incorrectly named the folder for the content. that is how it is showing up in the PLEX media server when I launch it from my NAS, it is basically labeled as a TV Show with the title that’s the same as the incorrectly named folder.

i changed the folder name and tried to get PLEX to do a rescan but this media still remains stuck with the old folder name. i also tried restarting my NAS in order to restart the media server - that didn’t change anything. the content itself and the metadata of each video is correctly labeled and that appears right along with artwork when i click into the level of the show itself … but at the ‘TV Show’ level in the server, it’s named with the old folder name.

i’m probably overlooking something trivial, anyone have some advice ?

Screen shots from both Web Client, as well as from the filesystem could help us help you

nothing personal, but i can’t do screenshots of this content. best i can do is describe.

starting from the top level, we have:

PLEX Categories: TV Shows
shows are presented there, those belong to that category. it looks like PLEX looks at folder name and identifies the TV Show object it’s showing you with the name of the folder.

For example, instead of the folder path being called “SHOWABC → Season 1”, I called it “Season 1”.

and in the top level TV Shows section of PLEX, it shows an icon of that show (the PLEX object) and it was named “Season 1”. if I click on it, i am now presented with what’s in that folder and those objects are correctly named according to the media metadata.

what I did, i went back and renamed that folder to be “SHOWABC” and then put the “Season 1” folder within it. PLEX did not make any change and that show still appears as “Season 1” … instead of “SHOWABC”.

the only way i was able to adjust this was to go into the PLEX object “Season 1” by clicking the pencil and changing the Title and Sort Title fields. so now the media itself is showing up under the header “SHOWABC”, as it should.

if I do an EDIT → info on the show, the file locations are pointing to the correct folder name and the content plays. just this PLEX generated metadata would not auto-update after moving the files around.

You are welcome to send them to me in a DM if needed

I simply can’t work with your descriptions

really sorry for delayed response …

also, this issue i described i identified as a result of how my content is structured and named.

i mistakenly assumed that most of my media appearing correctly while some did not appear at all … was because of an issue with plex. i did more research on the databases plex uses and also decided to rename my media to the correct plex-friendly format/convention which realigned the media for the most part.

i have several mini series and one off documentaries that needed more attention to file naming and folder placement in order for them to appear in plex when the library is scanned.

still have a lot of renaming to do, but when that’s done i think my media count in plex will match with what i really have on my hdd’s.
