Plex Media Server keeps stopping on Synology DS216play NAS

Plex Media Server Version: 1.25.0.5282
DSM Version: 6.2.4-25556 Update 2
Operating System: Windows 10 64-bit
Plex Media Server (PMS) stops regularly without any apparent reason. The NAS Music files are then unavailable on the Plex player on the TV or the phone until PMS is restarted on the NAS. The latest PMS logs include the latest event, which was just before 3pm on 6 Dec 2021.

I have saved the PMS Logs zip file, but I’m not sure how to upload it. Any tips appreciated.

Would you please do the following for me?

  1. Settings - Server - General - Show Advanced
  2. Uncheck the box for “Send Crash Reports to Plex”
  3. SAVE that change.
  4. The next time it crashes.
  5. FileStation → Plex / Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server / Crash Reports
  6. Now go into the 125.0.5282 folder → PLEX MEDIA SERVER
  7. You should find a .dmp file.
  8. Please make a ZIP of that and download it. I would like to see it.
  9. Next,
  10. Start Plex
  11. Download the logs ZIP file.

Lastly, Attach both ZIP files here for me to see.

Hi ChuckPa,
Thanks for responding.
I’ve unchecked the box for “Send Crash Reports to Plex” and saved the change.
Next time PMS crashes, I’ll generate both zip files and upload them as requested. I see the ‘Upload’ button now, by the way.

Hi ChuckPa,
I’ve attached the zip files.
I’ve also attached a screenshot of the NAS Library settings. It’s just a wild guess, but I wonder if the problem is something to do with the library scan, which is hourly?

Phil,

I can’t look at the dmp yet (I need access to an ARMv7 machine)

What I can see in your logs us pretty strange.

Why the reference to /var/services/music ?

Do you have a Synology username music ?

Hi ChuckPa,
I’m not sure why the reference to /var/services/music/ but there is no Synology username ‘music’. The only usernames are ‘admin’ (disabled), ‘guest’ (disabled), ‘plex’, and the administrator account I created.
I’ve uploaded a screenshot of File Station to show the directory structure of my directory named ‘music’. I seem to recall that the directory ‘music’ is standard on the Synology NAS, so I used that directory for the music files. I placed my music files into the subdirectories as shown, for convenience.
Phil

I have attached a screenshot of the permissions for the user ‘plex’. I wonder if it’s supposed to have ‘Read/Write’ access rather than ‘Read only’?

Phil,
Unless you have Plex optimizing media or recording DVR, Plex won’t need read/write access.

Is the ‘music’ shared folder the shared folder which Synology created or one you created ?

If it’s the Syno one, that would explain why the screwy location. It’s also contributes to the failures.

Any of the premade shared folders conflict with Plex because DSM always claims full ownership. This is why most of break from their mold.

Hi ChuckPa,
Thanks for the suggestion. The ‘music’ shared folder is a default Synology folder and I think that might well be the source of the problem.
I’ll reconfigure the library and let you know how I go.
Regards,
Phil

Hi ChuckPa,
I’ve reconfigured my media into separate library sections, moving them out of the predefined Synology directories as you recommended.
I set Plex to scan the library hourly and it has now been running for 24 hours without crashing, so it looks very much as though that had been the source of the problem.
Thank you for the guidance - it’s appreciated.
Phil
