Plex Media Server on SYNOLOGY DSM 7.1.1-42962 Update 5 wont run

Server Version#: 1.32.2.7100-7000
Cant start plex media server on my synology ds220+ (DSM 7.1.1-42962), if clicked “Run” in package center, it says starting but then stops and nothing happens, shows manually stopped. Tried using older version, stil the same. Where is the problem ?

Has nothing to do with DSM 7.1,1 update

Get and attach logs.

Startup Crash.log (80 Bytes)
It says:
May 24, 2023 06:53:24: Failed to initialize logging: Empty or non-existant file.

Confirm? There is no Logs directory under PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server ?

If you don’t then something got in there and broke the permissions.

DSM won’t break them and PMS runs as its own user and cant change them.

There are no logs in PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server, only here /PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server/Logs

Any suggestions what shall i do in this case ?

I want those files in the Logs directory.

  1. FileStation
  2. Navigate to PlexMediaServer / AppData / Plex Media Server
  3. Right-click Logs → Compress to Logs.zip
  4. Download the ZIP file
  5. Upload/attach it here for me to see what’s happening.

Here please find it attached.
Logs.zip (3.2 MB)

In this case would a clean PMS install solve my problem ? Of course i would loose my libraries as i understand ?

Any solutions ? Or should I try clean install ?

I think something broke the permissions in the PlexMediaServer shared folder.
(nothing / nobody should ever be in there unless instructed because it’s fragile on DSM 7)

Here’s how to fix it and see if we can get PMS working again.

This will take time to run.

Wait for the email to arrive and confirm it ran correctly.

Once you have that confirmation then start Plex.

Let me know the results.

Nope, didnt help.

I actually had a couple of subsequent power outages, which resulted in improper NAS shutdown, could it damage something in this case?

Should i try clean install ?

Before you do ANYTHIING.

Syno Main Menu (upper left) → Storage Manager

Make sure the volume is considered healthy.
If not, run scrub.
It might take 48 hours to finish (be prepared) if you have a big volume.

Do you have a USB UPS plugged into it to prevent this?

If not - GET ONE and plug in the USB cable so the Syno knows when to shut down SAFELY. (Syno supports APC brand)

I use a few of these around the house. Work great.

Choose whichever specific model suits your needs / financials but minimally get 450 VA for the Syno

It is healthy. Scrub is being done regularly.

So as i guess there are no other solutions besides clean install ?

This is the 2nd machine to go ‘stupid’

  1. Unstall + erase

  2. app.plex.tv
    – Follow this link. REMOVE the server you’re erasing.

  3. Install 1.29.2.6364 from Package Center.
