Plex Media Server not running at all (corrupt database/unable to open media database)

Server Version#:1.30.1.6497

I’m trying to install the media server so I can watch something on my Xbox from my computer. Well, I can’t even get that far. I installed the media server. It said it installed fine, but when I attempt to launch it, I get a pop up saying that "Plex Media Server was unable to open its media database. I’ve tried checking the integrity (came back ok). I’ve tried deleting the files from both appdata and program files, and still nothing. It’s the 32-bit version (running on Win7), but that shouldn’t matter. I can’t get it going AT ALL. I’ve tried uninstalling, reinstalling, redownloading, rebooting, everything I could think of, and this stupid server won’t start. I can’t even get to the annoying parts where it doesn’t read my media correctly, because it won’t start in the first place. I haven’t been able to find a solution, since everything assumes that it has worked at some point and you’re trying to fix something that went wrong. Well, nothing has gone wrong because the server won’t even start for the first time.

Any advice/help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

or

Type http://server.local.ip.address:32400/web into the address bar (e.g “http://192.168.1.5:32400/web”)

If you can’t access and claim the server that way try this

Thanks for the quick reply!

Unfortunately, that’s not working either. Again, the server isn’t running in the first place, so I don’t know what I’d be connecting to. I receive a “this site can’t be reached” error when I try that address. I tried my computer’s IP, I tried 127.0.0.1, and still nothing. I was running a VPN and thought that might be the issue, since it was also blocking me from accessing my router settings, but disabling that didn’t help either. I can access my router configuration now, but still nothing plex-related. I can put the media on a USB and watch it that way, but that’s not what I bought a lifetime Plex Pass for.

Since the server isn’t able to even start up, I don’t think it’s a configuration issue. At least not a network configuration issue. The server program is crashing before it even starts, and that’s what I need help troubleshooting.

Stop using Windows 7. Particularly on machines which have internet access.
I mean it. And this is not just about you. You are providing free accomodation for all kinds of a**holes and their malware.

It does matter greatly.

To get Plex running on Windows 7, you need to install

  • Windows Media Player
  • Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7
  • all updates for both Windows and Internet Explorer (might require several reboots and search for updates) That includes the last Service Pack for Windows 7.
  • Microsoft .Net and all updates for that

While I appreciate your advice, I don’t appreciate your tone. For reasons I’m not going to go into with you, this computer can’t run anything beyond w7. And I’m not worried about malware. Between the software I’m running, my hardware protection, and what I actually use this machine for, I’m unlikely to encounter any.

That being said, if their software still supports it, it should work. I shouldn’t have to either spend a bunch of money on or pirate an OS just to make it work. If the software won’t work on a platform, they shouldn’t offer it on said platform.

And for the record, this isn’t going to be my main media server. I just had the file I wanted to watch and figured I’d do it through Plex. After all, that’s what it’s for. Once I get my old Linux box up and running again I anticipate fewer issues. But for now I’d still like to make it work in Windows.

And afaik, all that stuff is installed. The computer was totally up to date last I checked, and I know it’s got .net because something else required it. The only thing that might be missing is ie11. I usually disable ie, but I’ll check that out. If that’s what’s causing the issue I’ll be surprised, but we’ll see.
