Plex Media Server not starting on Synology DS1019+ "Failed to run the package service"

I went on to the PLE website and downloaded 1.20.1.3252-a78fef9a9-x86_64.spk

I selected this version from the dropdown for synology NAS

My PLEX login account was telling me my version was out of date, so i tried to update it today

Try downloading it with a different browser.
I suggest because sometimes the downloaded file gets damaged

OK, should I uninstall PLEX, then download and try to re-install using manual updates feature on package center?

Yes please.

Your data is kept safe. It’s always ok to uninstall the package.

no luck, same error message. I do have an older version of Plex from 3 weeks ago, I could try to install this version if you think it would make a difference

Yes… try that but please restart the Syno first. Something isn’t right.

you mean just power off the synology by pressing the power button? sorry for such a basic questions, but I am new NAS and just installed this 3 weeks ago

powering it off (hard) is not advised and will cause problems.

In the upper right corner of the UI is Options -> Shutdown (click the silhouette )

Thanks, found it. i removed uninstalled plex again, and am shutting it down now

No luck. tried to reinstall the PKG Center version and it didnt work, also tried to install the latest version i downloaded 30 minutes ago. Same error message

How do you normally turn off the NAS or do you leave it on all the time?

I leave it on all the time. But its only a two weeks old

When you installed Plex, did it complain about the trust level of the package?

The default is to only allow Synology packages.

I understand “failed to run” is after install but something is wrong and I’m trying to grasp what it could be. (normally I start beating on the keyboard)

Nothing unusual… It asked me if I trusted the source before installing, then it installed fine.

I give it a few minutes after install then I open the plex app and ask it to RUN. then i get the error

can you get to the Syno ssh command line?

If you can,

# grep -i plex /var/log/synopkg.log

It should look something like this:

admin@moesern:/var/log$

yes, i think so. I ran the script and it is many pages long

what you’re interested in is the most recent start attempt (at the bottom)

“Return code = 0” means no errors.

what I am showing above is the installation and startup.

here is the last page of my readoutCapture

let’s do it this way please.

  1. Create a scheduled task of type user-script
  2. paste these two commands in it and run the script once
  3. The output will be in your Plex share (volume1).
  4. Compress the file (right-click it)
  5. Attach that file here with your reply.

The commands

grep -i plex /var/log/synopkg.log > /volume1/Plex/synopkg-plex.txt
chmod 777 /volume1/Plex/synopkg-plex.txt

It will look like

After we’re done, you can delete the files.

Afterthought: Are you using encryption anywhere?
