Plex Media Server prevents Windows 10 sleep/hibernation (both PC AND monitors)

Does anyone know if plex are aware of this issue and trying to resolve it?
I can confirm the issue is not specific to the xbox one app either as the same is happening with my samsung tv.

Closing PMS and reopening it allows the computer to sleep.

Hi guys
I have just come across this fix to kill streams via the admin account, on another thread. Can you guys confirm that this does work for you?

Yes, I have used it…
It has not fixed my issue with my servers going to sleep.
It looks like there is a process between my servers and Plex TV that keeps them awake.
I’m still looking into this and as when I find what is excellently happening I’ll post it.

Thanks all for your help. I still got this issue that my Win 10 Pro with the Plex Media Server on it doesn’t goes to sleep since 2 months now.
powercfg /requests

                       still shows:

[PROCESS] \Device\HarddiskVolume7\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server\Plex Media Server.exe

after stopping & deactivating "Plex Update Service"

I wonder why no Plex Admin/Ninja is looking into this and no comments from them!?

I was having a problem a little while ago with sleeping my Server PC too, until I realized that it was the DLNA Server needing to be tweaked. Have you guys tried this below tweak as well? Let me know if it fixes things

Yes, I’ve seen that…

I don’t have DLNA enabled on any of my servers, (Windows 7 Pro 64bit)
But when I first saw that, I did the turn on, save, restart, turn off save restart,

Didn’t change anything…

I’m thinking that Plex has changed something in order to fix all the remote access reports I’ve been seeing, I’ll bet it keeps Plex active and the server from going to sleep.

notice no one from Plex has made any comments…

Same here. Did the DLNA ā€œtweakā€ as prposed which didn’t change anything.
And again, turning PMS off lets the PC going to sleep/hibernate as set in the Windows energy saving options.

Still no PLEX ADMINS care about the problem it seems.

Yep, this was it for me. Thank you laugope90.

I’m having the same issue. I didn’t change anything and have done all the Plex updates and I noticed probably a month ago (could have been a little longer) that all of a sudden my computer is no longer sleeping when not in use and ā€œpowercfg requestsā€ shows it is Plex that is keeping it awake. I’ve never had problems with Plex doing this before. Any help would be appreciated.

I can verify that this does seem to work. My computer is now sleeping again.

After trying everything in this thread and having no luck, I tried one other thing and I am now able to get my server to sleep. I opened the settings page on the server, and under the Web Client section, go to General, then uncheck the box for ā€œAdvertise as playerā€. After doing this, windows is now sleeping properly.

I’ve tried every solution on here and some of my own. Each seems promising at first but don’t fix the problem. I’m still getting the same issue as shown in powercfg :
"PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> powercfg -requests
DISPLAY:
None.

SYSTEM:
[PROCESS] \Device\HarddiskVolume5\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server\Plex Media Server.exe

I understand the software is complex and the issue could take time to sort, but confirmation that the bug is being looked at would be nice.

I pay for plex pass purely to support the developers as I don’t use any of the extra features. Plex is run from my main PC so i don’t won’t it left running all of the time. I set it all up so I can turn it on remotely and it would sleep after a few hours (long enough to watch a film etc). This meant i didn’t have to think about it. I’m now walking into my office room and the PC is from a couple of days before when my kids had watched a movie.

A fix is required as this is affecting many users. I’m getting to the point where I cancel my monthly subscription. I’ve worked out I’ve paid over Ā£230 over the years and I’m beginning to wonder why

@k_t_lloyd , Have you tried the fixes in Part D) of the following guide? Best to try each part to get everything fixed properly-

Thanks for all the help here! Couple questions:

  1. I turned off DLNA, is that what my TV uses to connect? It’s a Sony Bravia with the Plex App installed. Only other things I would use is a phone or Kindle Fire with the app.
  2. I killed also killed the Plex Update Service. Is this something that will keep turning back on?

I’m not sure if one or both of the above helped, but now when I hit my power button it goes to sleep!

  1. Does the auto update for Library prevent sleep? I read that somewhere, but wasn’t sure if that was accurate, so I have it as manual for now.
  2. Some posts talked about an option about ā€œAllow the computer to sleepā€. Where is this located?

Thanks for the help!

Hi there,

Yes I have also heard of people turning off the DLNA Windows Server function due to believing that it tampers with sleep functionality or other features. It’s best not to do this. DLNA allows for better home network streaming of media to other devices.

If people follow the steps involved in the above guide link, there is likely no need to disable any Plex Update Services in Windows. Your computer needs to be configured properly to allow things to work properly.

And the ā€œAllow the computer to sleepā€ ability setting instructions are located in Part D) of the above guide link.

Cheers and I hope this helps:)

Thanks for that link! I had the computer sleeping, but I think a Windows update over the weekend has me back to not sleeping. I’ll switch DLNA on and see if it makes a difference. I did notice that Plex Update Service is back running in Services, which I had stopped. Maybe that restarted somehow and is blocking it, which I know people have thought might be it.

I think I have all the power settings the same as in your guide, but I’ll go through it again.

Yes, absolutely @bcemail . Windows updates and the sleep functionality is also covered in the guide in Part F).
I myself have not tampered with any Plex services running in background, and have not had any issues with Plex preventing Windows from sleeping. This background service is likely needed for Plex to run properly. I wouldn’t be tampering with this stuff :+1:

Turning off Advertise as player under Web Client seemed to fix the problem for me.

Hi all,

Turning off Advertise as player worked for me too.

The problem is that now the pc goes to sleep, but it wakes up after 1 minute by itself.

Any suggestions?

I had exactly the same problem.

PC started bouncing to sleep and back to wake and waking me at night.
