Plex Media Server Shield TV 2017 Crash USB Key Out Of Order?

Server Version#:
Player Version#:

Hello,
I have a Shield Tv for 6 months.
Although I regularly encounter the crash of the Plex Media Server (it never takes more than 4 or 5 days), which forces me to restart the shield, overall it worked.
Even if having to restart the Shield when you are not at home is complicated.

About a week ago, the Shield Tv server was not accessible, so I restarted the Shield, even several times but ditto.
So I concluded that the server was really out of order.
In the application settings (on the Shield TV) I erased the data from the Plex Media Server as well as the cache, so I created a new server.
For information, I put the database (very important) on a USB stick connected to the Shield.

I tried to export the data on the USB stick I used until then, but the Shield and Plex no longer seems to recognize the key.
I tried formatting the USB key from the PC but still the same. Odd, because the key works without problems on my PC.

So I tried to use a new USB key (USB 3 32GB).

As soon as the new Plex Server is created, I tell Plex (on the Shield) to put the data on the USB stick.
Until then, it’s OK.
Then from the PC, I create my media library.
And there it turns, it takes hours to scan and find the jackets (when he finds them because it is so long that it seems to have trouble writing on the USB key).

If I do not use a USB key, the scan is done normally.
But if after the scans of the media library, I want to move the data on a USB key via the Plex application of the Shield TV, and it’s endless. It runs for hours without success.
If we interrupt, the media library is planted and we must start all over again.

It becomes more and more complicated to use the Shield TV’s Plex Server.
It’s really painful.
Too bad because it is an application (when it works) pleases the whole family.

I do not understand because on my NAS Synology (which can not encode on the fly) the application is relatively stable.

If you have a track to help me, I’m interested …
Thank You

How is the USB drive formatted? My guess is fat32. This won’t work with Plex. Try formatting as NTFS and see if that works better.

FAT32 or NTFS, it’s the same problem.

Can you provide me the logs from PMS running on the shield? Maybe there are errors reported that will indicate the problem. As of now, I’m not sure what would cause the scanning to be so slow. I have a Shield with a usb drive attached and it doesn’t work as slow as you describe.

OK thank you but how can i provide you the logs from PMS running on the shield?

Use Plex Web, access your Shield server. Settings \ Server \ Help \ Download logs. Attach that file to your next comment.

This is it …

I’m not seeing any issues. Looks like you recreated your server and started scanning your libraries. Your Anime library took about 8 minutes, the TV show about 28 minutes and your Films library about 20 minutes. These are the normal times for a brand new library so this part all looks ok.

I don’t see any errors related to saving the data. If this only happens with the USB drive, it could be you have a bad usb port. Have you tried using the other port on the Shield? It could be a bad driver for the port too. Have you tried a factory reset?

I’m just not seeing any issues related to Plex. And as you said, it works fine when you don’t use the usb drive. It has to be related to that somehow.

The last scanning are short because I did it on Shield and not on USB (2 ports USB are the same thing).
When I create a server in using only memory’s Shield, all is OK.

Ah. Well, I’ll need to see the log when you are using the USB to see what is going on. I’m sorry, this will mean having to recreate your server again, but that will be the only way to find clues to what is happening.

OK, i will try it tomorrow and I post the new log here.
Thank you for your help !

Hello,
I deleted my server on Shield.
I created a new server on Shield.
Before add movies on Server, I tranfered data on USB (USB3 NTFS), so, it’s very fast.
On PC Plew Web, I added 2 folders : 1 folder with Series et 1 folder with some Movies.
It was about 08h55 and at 09h50 it isn’t finish.
If I did it without USB Key, in 15 minutes (or less) it would have been finished.
You will find log in this post, but the server is still scanning.
It found all the Series (folders) but it only displays 2 pictures on 26, and it didn’t start the folders Movies.
Thanks again for your help.

At 12h40, Scan finished, but Series has 2 pictures, and Movies has lot of pictures missing.

Looking over your log, it shows that PMS identified all of your TV show library in about 2 minutes. It then tries to download the data and update the Plex database with the information it downloaded. This all appears to be working as expected, just very slowly. I do see messages about your database being busy and slow downloads of the posters. I don’t see anything to say why it’s running slow. My guess is the usb drive just can’t handle the stress. Then having it finally stop and only have 2 shows would indicate it wasn’t able to save all that data properly.

Not sure what to check next. Maybe try doing a speed check on your usb drive. Transfer a file to it from your computer and see how long that takes.

I’ve been able to recreate the issue. I am investigating.

OK, thank you very much for your patience.
I’m waiting for your new instructions …

Hello,
But how did you recreate the problem ?

I had a working setup before so I didn’t notice an issue. I erased my usb drive and started over. I created a new library. At first, it appeared to be working, but after digging through the actual data, I found it did not actually download most of it. My setup did find all my files, so I’m not sure why yours was missing things, but it’s probably related. PMS is somehow having trouble writing the metadata to the USB drive.

Thank you for your return.
This would mean that it is the latest version of PMS that poses a problem on a new media library ?
Or the Shield who can not do the job ?

I don’t know. I need time to test other PMS versions to see when it broke. Or it might have been a Shield update. We’ll see after some testing.
