Plex Media Server updates are not available in Synology's Package Center?

I have a Synology DS214play with the latest software update (version DSM 5.1-5022) installed. On this NAS, I have installed the Plex Media Server (version 0.9.9.12.504-3e7f93c) using Synology's Package Center (I did not upload any .spk file to the Package Center manually). I recently noticed that several new versions of the PMS have been released, but when I click the "Update" button in the Package Center, it keeps telling me that "All packages are up-to-date." despite that there are several new releases.

Has Plex stopped publishing PMS packages to Synology's Package Center?

If no, when will the new packages of the Media Server be published to Synology's Package Center so that I can update my NAS?

If yes, I noticed that you can install PMS manually ( https://forums.plex.tv/topic/132719-how-to-install-plex-on-a-ds214play/?hl=%2Bpackage+%2Bcenter ). Which is the suggested way to migrate (preferably without need of reindexing all files)?

Thanks

Don't expect Synology to have the latest PMS version in their catalog. You can download the latest version from here (DS214play uses the Intel package) and install, using "manual install" in the Syno. Your database will be preserved, no need to rebuild it.

Second the above poster, synology wont get the updates as often as the plex has them

I contacted Synology's support earlier regarding this matter, and their response was:

Unfortunately, we do not provide that package, it is updated by Plex themselves. So if the updated version isn't available on our Package Centre I can only apologise and ask for you to contact Plex directly.

I can install the updated version manually like you suggest, but I prefer the managed version if I know that there is one coming?

According to the PMS download archive ( https://plex.tv/downloads/1/archive ) the 0.9.9.12 version was released about a half year ago (17th June last year). Is there any reason why Plex does not publish its releases to the Synology Package Center more often?

You can subscribe this thread to receive alerts of new PMS releases.

If you are using DSM 5.1 you also need to open package center and click on 'settings' then set the trust level to allow 'any publisher'.

@moody_blue: thanks.

Changing the trust level to "any publisher" is the major reason why I prefer that Plex publish their releases to Synology so they can be downloaded from the Package Center directly instead of me installing them manually.

You shouldnt have to do that, I never did.

Same issue here !

Trying to upload the update manually and I did select any publisher option but getting an error message saying the app is not signed.

I don't get why PLEX will not update the version on the store it will be easier for all users instated of doing it manually :(

Found the solution it need to be done using forefoot and then it works doesn't work manual install via safari and chrome :)

It's not plex that wont update the store, this has been covered, it's synology, they take forever to update their channels.

Hi,

my Plex on Synology is still stuck at version 0.9.16.3.1840 even though the current version seems to be 1.4.1. Why isn’t Plex pushing any new versions to the Package Center anymore?

The Package Center is controlled by Synology, not by Plex. That is why you always have to manually install the latest Plex version after downloading it from the Plex website.

Are you saying that Synology from time to time (and very infrequently) is pulling a version of Plex on their own and publishing it to their Package Center without contacting the Plex devs? Sounds quite odd…

hello,

so why plex doesn’t create their own repository?

I’m working on creating a repository.
I also need to create proper repositories for those other NAS products which support them.
When all are minimally testable and stable, I will have more to say.

Hi there.

I have a Synology DS218+ and I was able to update Plex with the latest version manually but not any more. Every time I download the latest version from Plex, I go to manual install and then I get an “operation failed” error message.

I am using the latest DSM 6.2

Any way to fix this?

Synology does not provide the 64 bit version in Package Center.

Therefore, if you have the 64 bit version installed, Package Center does not allow you to ‘upgrade’ to the 32 bit version.

If you are using hardware transcoding, you must use the 64 bit version from plex.tv/downloads and “Manually Install”

What is the easiest way to verify that we are running the 64-bit version? I want to make sure HW encoding is working. Thanks.

Travis

Settings - Server - Transcoder - Show Advanced.

You’ll see the option to enable it

Ok, I understand now.

So, if I want to use the 64 bit version and use the Manual Install feature, I will need to remove the 32 bit that I installed through Synology’s Package Center, am I right?

Is there a way to keep my settings as they are right now, uninstall Plex and then manually install it on my Synology?

Thank you

That’s correct.

Don’t worry about losing metadata or any of your settings. When the installer runs, it creates the Plex share for your metadata. It keeps the program code elsewhere.

When the package is uninstalled, I don’t delete the Plex share. I did it this way because Synology doesn’t allow us to downgrade a package

When the installer does run, if the Plex share already exists, I attach to it and use it
