It’s getting to be super annoying to constantly have to manually update Plex seemingly every other week. Synology’s Package Center has an auto-update feature for things published in their package manager index, and Package Center on DSM even allows for auto-updatable packages stored at other URLs.
Can Plex (the company) please publish their updates to the native package manager for the platform? I’m sure it’s even something you could automate, and then NONE of us would have to keep manually moving package installation files around.
Whether they choose to update Package Center is beyond our control.
Historically, they update when it suited them due to a breaking change in DSM 5 & 6.
It has been this way for a long time.
We are hoping to have a better relationship with more timely updates beginning with DSM 7.
That really sucks. I’m sorry to hear that Synology is leaving your development efforts out in the cold.
Thanks for your effort and what you do. Have ‘you’ (read “Plex company”) considered using their custom “package sources” feature to set up your own build and update distribution repository?
Yes, Engineering knows about setting up a respository.
The problem has been finding free time for the team between 2-4am when they should be sleeping to get it done .
There is so much to do and never enough time.
I can tell you, and all who are also reading here, I feel as if I’ve finished the DSM 7 packaging overhaul. I’m really pleased with how it’s turned out.
I can only hope everyone likes what’s been done.
It should make everyone’s life easier as well as give me a whole new platform from which to add management features to (import - export - backup - etc).
For the first since I took over the Synology effort, it feels like a proper Synology package to me.
I do have a few more ‘tweaks’ to complete which will hopefully be implemented, with Synology’s assistance, before their Beta program is completed.
