Just need some clarification. So I’ve set up the “List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth” box with my phone’s home ip address. My server and phone are on the same network. If my network is down but my phone and server are connected to the network (Shows up in settings but can’t surf the net), does plex work? If there was a power outage and power to the router was shut off, would the server still function? Basically what I’m asking is would the server work without being connected to anything at all? And would the server work if it was connected to a network but couldn’t access any websites?
I am sad to say that so far all that can be said for an answer seems to be, it depends.
The functionality keeps changing with updates, so I can not say for sure what will happen with your versions of server and client software. Every PLATFORM release also has many differences on the SERVER and CLIENT programs.
It seems to work nicely if you DO NOT have a PLEX pass. If you have a PLEX pass however, the default of using the INTERNET access to your server through PLEX.TV seems to be the only way to get full functionality of even the functions that were available without the PLEX PASS.
If you go directly to your SERVER by name or IP address and port number, sometimes it works well, but it seems that, for me at least, even then things seem to break if the internet is down, even when the client and the server are on the same local network.
I hope that helps. If you re-enable the UPnP server discovery on the server which automatically gets turned off when you add a PLEX PASS, it may help, but there is a security concern when using your server over the internet if it is enabled, which is why it is shut off when adding a PLEX PASS. So if you enable full UPnP server fucntionality with NO internet available, to should be disabled again when the internet is back on-line.
