Plex Media Server Won't Fully Install

I have been trying to download the Plex Media Server 1.13.5.5332-21AB172DE onto my Windows computer but it won’t open or show that it downloaded after I hit ‘launch’. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled and repaired it but nothing happens. I had it on a previous computer but have since bought a new one.

I’ve also tried downloading the server directly to my My Cloud Home using the Download for NAS platform, but I get a similar issue.

Please note that there is no interface when you run Plex Media Server. It runs in the background so there is nothing that opens. Look in your system tray (bottom right next to your clock) and see if there is a Plex icon there? That will indicate PMS is running. You can also check the task manager to see if PMS is running.

If you see the icon in the system tray, right click on it, then select “Open Plex”. This will open your default web browser and load Plex Web, which is a Plex client for viewing your media but also what is used to manage PMS.

There is no icon in the tray. When it first says ‘Launch’ I pin it to the taskbar, but it doesn’t fully open a web browser. If I manually go to plex.tv, it says it’s still searching for servers.

Do you mean at the end of the installation process? That is the installer. You don’t pin that. Look in your Start Menu and see if you can find Plex Media Server listed as a program. Click on that to start it. Then look for the icon in the system tray. When you find it, there is also an option there to automatically launch at Windows start. The default should be enabled. Have you restarted Windows since you installed PMS? If you had closed PMS somehow, you need to manually restart it unless you restart Windows, then it should auto load.

If PMS isn’t running, then there is nothing to find. Try the above first.

Yes, it’s the Plex Media Server in my Start Menu that I pin to the task bar, but it won’t open. Whether I click on it from the Start menu or the taskbar, nothing happens at all. I have uninstalled and reinstalled, and restarted my computer a few times and still nothing. Even when I try to test the compatibility, it won’t open the test program.

Ok, it’s possible there was a problem during the installation. Can you check your installed programs and see if Plex Media Server might have already been installed. If not, then try installed again. You might want to re-download the installer from our website incase the one you are using is corrupted. Then check the installed programs again.

If that still doesn’t work, please find the installer log and provide that. You can find that manually in the Plex log folder. These should be located at %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server\Logs.

I’m not sure what you are doing here. We don’t have a compatibility test program.

I uninstalled and reinstalled for the 3rd time and still nothing. It shows that the Media Server is downloaded in my Apps and Programs, but won’t open or allow me to Run as Administrator.

When I search for the logs, nothing comes up. I can’t even get to them from the Web App as https://support.plex.tv/articles/200250417-plex-media-server-log-files/ says to do.

Does no response mean the reason for this issue is unknown, so there’s no way to fix it?

Sorry for the delay. Just trying to find why the program won’t run.

Are you trying using the same file you downloaded? Maybe the download was bad and didn’t install everything. Have you tried downloading the installer again. Do you know how to get the checksum for the file and compare it to what we have on the website to make sure the file is complete.

If you don’t know how to find the checksum, you can after the download, right click on the file and go to properties. Then click on the “digital signature” tab. Plex, Inc. should be listed in there. If not, you have a bad download.

Even with a bad install, you should still be able to manually get to the log files. Can you provide a screenshot showing that the Plex folder is not at the location I provided above?
